Japan hit by powerful earthquake just days after first anniversary of tsunami disaster

A tsunami warning was issued after the 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck off the north-eastern coast of the country this morning

Japan has been rocked by a powerful earthquake just days after marking the first anniversary of the devastating tsunami which killed around 19,000 people. The 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck off the north-eastern coast of the country this morning. The strong tremors prompted the Japan Meteorological Agency to issue a tsunami warning for the Pacific coast of Iwate, Aomori and Hokkaido.

Iwate prefecture was badly damaged in last year’s earthquake and tsunami. The epicentre was about 146 miles (235km) south of Kushiro, Japan, on Hokkaido island and was a relatively shallow 16 miles (26km) below the ocean floor. The quake was not felt in Tokyo, more than 450 miles (730km) away. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii said there was no threat of a Pacific-wide wave.

TOKYO — A series of earthquakes rattled Tokyo and northeastern Japan on Wednesday evening but caused no apparent damage or injury in the same region hit by last year’s devastating tsunami.

A magnitude-6.8 earthquake first struck the southern coast of Hokkaido island in the evening, causing a small tsunami. Tsunami advisories were issued along the northern Pacific coast, prompting some communities to advise residents to evacuate coastal homes. A strong earthquake shook northern Japan on Wednesday evening, just days after the one-year anniversary of a devasting earthquake and tsunami. View photos of the aftermath and recovery.

Across Japan on Sunday, people paused at 2:46 p.m., the moment the magnitude-9.0 quake struck a year ago, for moments of silence, prayer and reflection about the enormous losses suffered and monumental tasks ahead. A swelling of 20 centimeters (8 inches) was observed in water at the port of Hachinohe in Aomori about an hour after the tremor, with smaller changes reported elsewhere. The agency lifted all tsunami advisories within about 90 minutes. Within about three hours, a magnitude-6.1 quake shook buildings in the capital. It was centered just off the coast of Chiba, east of Tokyo, at a rather shallow 15 kilometers (9 miles) below the sea surface.

Narita International Airport briefly closed runways for inspection but later resumed operation. Several local train services were suspended for safety checks. There were no abnormalities reported at nuclear power plants after the two earthquakes, operators said. Nearly all of Japan’s nuclear plants are offline for safety inspections. This past Sunday, Japan marked the first anniversary of the massive magnitude-9.0 earthquake and tsunami that left some 19,000 people dead or missing, wreaked widespread damage along the northeastern coast, and triggered the worst nuclear accident since Chernobyl. Rebuilding has yet to fully begin in many coastal communities.

The temblors were considered aftershocks of last year’s massive quake, Meteorological Agency official Akira Nagai told a news conference, warning residents to stay away from buildings and plots already loosened by that tremor and the thousands of aftershocks that have followed. After the first quake on Wednesday, the town of Otsuchi in Iwate prefecture, where more than 800 died in last year’s tsunami, issued an evacuation order to coastal households as a precaution, said prefectural disaster management official Shinichi Motoyama. No damage or injury was reported, he said.

I guess that's another prediction blown out of the water. How will they explain that away?

EMSC now have as 7.0 and 47 km. Still shallow enough to cause damage, though hopefully not as much as first feared. The epicentre was inland so a tsunami was - thankfully - unlikely.

And I would like to know what '188 day cycle' Yamkin is referring to. Asking such a simple question is hardly being 'picky' now, is it? A simple explanation, along with supporting data, will be fine...
