Large Earthquake swarm in southwest Iceland overnight.

Somethings about to give soon I think,

Afraid its nothing quite so exciting...

Its the geothermal power station at Hengill that is causing these quakes. From time to time the pumps force cold water down into the bedrock which causes these earthquake spikes, at present they are currently pumping water so expect to see a few more clusters over the next week.

Update

On 9/15/2011 8:43:07 AM UTC an earthquake of magnitude 6 and depth 10km has struck an unpopulated area in the Granma Province (population: 0.8 million) in Cuba. GDACS estimates the likelihood for need of international humanitarian intervention to be low (Green alert). This earthquake can have a low humanitarian impact since the affected region is unpopulated and has high resilience for natural disasters.

The nearest populated places are [None]. It is a hilly region with a maximum altitude of 597 m.

Four earthquakes were registered nearby the Kuril Islands in Russia's Far East, a spokesman of the Ministry of Emergency Situations in Sakhalin region said on Saturday. "The first earthquake of 7.1 magnitude was registered at 6:35 Sakhalin time (12:35 GMT) 460 km south-east of the city of Yuzhno-Kurilsk. Three earthquakes of 5.8, 6 and 5.9 magnitude were reported at 7:10, 8:09 and 8:38 (Sakhalin time), respectively," the spokesman said. Epicenters were located in the Pacific Ocean and the earthquakes were not felt in the region. There is no tsunami threat, said the spokesman.
