Another one today, this time in Izmir, Turkey. The tremor happened last night at 11.15 pm Eastern European Time. Its epicentre was in the small town of Simav, electricity and telephone phone lines are reported to be down. The quake was followed by 50 aftershocks, with some being felt as far away as Istanbul.

Tourists in resorts around Turkey's coastal city of Izmir have been rocked by an earthquake that has killed two people. The 5.9 magnitude quake hit the small town of Simav, about 100 miles north of Izmir, just before midnight and its effects were felt as far away as Istanbul. Terrified residents ran out of their homes and stayed sleeping in their cars for the rest of the night after being warned against going back inside

Reuters reporting:

An earthquake of 6.4 magnitude struck off Chile's Pacific coast on Wednesday, causing no damage or injuries in a region rocked by a massive tremor last year. The quake's epicenter was 60 miles (96 km) southwest of Concepcion and occurred at a depth of nine miles (15 km), USGS said.

The U.S. agency initially reported the quake as 6.3 magnitude. The temblor was felt with low intensity in Chile's south-central region, the same area that was devastated by a massive quake in February 2010. Chile's national emergency office said there were no reports of damage or injuries. State-run oil company ENAP said the quake did not affect the country's largest oil refinery Bio Bio, which is near the region. The epicenter of the new quake was far from the country's copper-producing region in the north.

Sunday June 5 2011, 11:51:12 UTC 20 minutes ago west of Macquarie Island 6.3 10.0

i wonder if tsunami could be generated

only 10k deep

update

M 6.3 2011/06/05 11:51 Depth 10.0 km WEST OF MACQUARIE ISLAND

09:51:12 PM at epicenter

Harmless very strong ridge earthquake (2 separating tectonic plates) in the subantarctic Ocean

NO tsunami danger because too weak to generate tsunami waves.

As you can see on the map below, the greater epicenter area (hundreds of km) is human being free.

794 km (493 miles) WSW of Macquarie Island, Australia

That's a fascinating map — I'm amazed how many earthquakes there are each day. Thanks for posting!

Has the number, size or depth of the quakes in California changed recently? I didn't realise how many they were getting each day — I'd find that unnerving I think.
