A 7.4 quake in the bonin islands approximately 650 miles south of japan hit on monday triggering

numerous aftershocks of 5mag and above and a large one of 6.3 mag.

7.4 2010/12/21 17:19:41 26.892 143.726 14.0 BONIN ISLANDS, JAPAN REGION

6.3 2010/12/22 21:49:39 26.780 143.635 11.0 BONIN ISLANDS, JAPAN REGION

Tokyo, Japan (CNN) -- A magnitude 7.4 earthquake off the coast of Japan early Wednesday triggered a tsunami warning for a group of remote islands and an advisory for the southern region of the country, the Japanese Meteorological Agency said.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake, which occurred 3:19 a.m., is about 95 miles (155 km) from Chichi-shima, Ogasawara Islands.

A tsunami is a series of destructive sea waves caused by an earthquake, and the warning required people in the islands to evacuate from the seashore immediately to safe places.

According to an initial observation by the Japanese agency, the tsunami height is estimated to be up to 2 meters.

The tsunami advisory stretched across the southern Japanese coast. The quake epicenter is 210 miles (335 km) from Iwo Jima in the Volcano Islands, and 650 (1,050 km) miles from Tokyo.

The Japan National Tourism Organization says the "Ogasawara Islands is the general term for 30 islands of various size scattered over the Pacific Ocean." They are also known as the Bonin Islands.

Chichi-shima island, "the main island and the entrance to the area, is 1,000 kilometers south of downtown Tokyo in the Pacific Ocean, and it has a land area of about 24 square kilometers. Water-eroded high cliffs surround the island making the scenery even more magnificent, and the area is a popular spot for divers," the organization said.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said a Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected.

"No destructive widespread tsunami threat exists based on historical earthquake and tsunami data," the Warning Center said.

"However, earthquakes of this size sometimes generate local tsunamis that can be destructive along coasts located within a hundred kilometers of the earthquake epicenter. Authorities in the region of the epicenter should be aware of this possibility and take appropriate action."

There seems to be an increase in earthquake activity on the San Andreas fault lately with a 4.5 quake yesterday and two more 3+ ones following soon after.

Here is an interesting report from a local newspaper on the quakes.:-

4.5 quake jolts area

Jan 12, 2011

By Blair Tellers - Staff Writer

Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImageA noticeable 4.5-magnitude earthquake rocked several area residents out of sleep at 12:51 this morning, marking the second and third quakes in 12 hours to strike the region.

The quake was centered six miles southeast of San Juan Bautista, eight miles southwest of Hollister and occurred at a depth of 5.2 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey website.

Jim Berkland, an 80-year-old retired "maverick" geologist whose public prediction of the devastating 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake (also known as the World Series quake) earned him a two-month suspension from his job as Santa Clara County geologist, predicts more to come with high chances of shakes March 20.

"This is an extremely strong period here; it's going to culminate in March," he told the Dispatch today from his Glen Ellen home.

Wednesday morning's earthquake was felt as far away as San Jose, which also experienced a 4.1-magnitude temblor at 4:10 p.m. Friday. That earthquake's epicenter was 11 miles north of Morgan Hill.

Wednesday morning's episode was followed by 17 aftershocks reported on the USGS website, including a magnitude-3.4 earthquake that occurred at 1 a.m. about five miles from San Juan Bautista. The last aftershock hit at 6:09 a.m.

Between Saturday and today, there has been a moderate swarm of small earthquakes occurring in areas between San Jose and San Juan Bautista according to USGS website.

Residents in Hollister said after this morning's initial jolt at 12:51 a.m., the ground seemed to roll for several more seconds.

Workers at Mi Pueblo Food Center and Safeway on First Street in Gilroy said the temblor caused no damaged to their facilities and that nothing fell off the shelves.

Sgt. Chad Gallacinao with the Gilroy Police Department said neither the GPD or the Gilroy Fire Department received any report of injuries or significant damage.

Susan Garcia, public information specialist for the Earthquake Science Center at the USGS, said the earthquake likely happened near the San Andreas fault, which dissects Hecker Pass halfway between Gilroy and Watsonville and sandwiches Santa Clara County with another fault inland.

"In the mountains to the west, you have the San Andreas Fault; to the east, you have the Calaveras Fault," explained David Oppenheimer, a seismologist and manager of the Northern California Earthquake Hazards Team.

As for Berkland's prediction he explained during March, the moon would make its closest approach to the earth in the past five years.

"Historically, there are three months that are the most prolific for damaging earthquakes in the Bay Area," he said. "March, April and October."

Berkland told the Dispatch Oct. 13, 1989 he expected an 85 percent chance for a 6.5 to 7-magnitude earthquake to occur in the coming week. Four days later, a major earthquake struck the San Francisco Bay area.

Berkland, who was a Santa Clara County geologist from 1973 to 1994, said the temblor action could be happening between March 19 and March 26.

"It's an earthquake-prone period," he said. "The odds are increased."

To this, Garcia said there is a one in five chance of a magnitude-6.7 or greater event on the San Andreas Fault system in the next 30 years.

At least it hit a fairly sparsely populated area ...off in the far SW corner of Pakistan, close to the Afghan/Iran borders.

Yep Thankfully the USGS revised it.

"In its initial reports the US Geological Survey (USGS) said the quake happened at a depth of just 10km (6.2 miles).

Earthquakes at such a shallow depth have the potential to cause major destruction and loss of life.

However, a later bulletin from the USGS revised the depth of the quake to 84km, potentially limiting the effects."

A tsunami advisory was cancelled in Japan Wednesday, hours after a 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of the main island of Honshu, the country's meteorological agency said. The quake was centered 169 kilometers (105 miles) off the east coast of Honshu, directly east of the city of Sendai, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The quake occurred about 8.8 miles below the earth's surface, the geological survey said. CNN correspondent Kyung Lah said she could feel the earthquake in Tokyo, 267 miles (429 kilometers) southwest of the quake's epicenter. It lasted as long as three minutes, but there was no significant damage, she said. TV Asahi showed video of boats rocking back and forth, as well as images taken from shaken city cams as the earthquake hit.

Mag 7.9 about 60 miles from the coast off of north-eastern Hokkaido, only 30 miles down, with a 6-metre tsunami warning issued, after a lot of activity in the area over the last week or so. Fingers crossed that the warning is a false alarm.

Yep a hugh 8.8 and already reports of a massive shock wave pushing cars etc inland.....

This one might require a thread of its own, too early yet though.

"Japanese television has shown major tsunami damage in northern Japan, following an earthquake that has been upgraded to 8.8.

Public broadcaster NHK showed cars, trucks, houses and buildings being swept away by the tsunami in Onahama city in Fukushima prefecture.

Scores of cars were seen floating in Iwate prefecture harbour, local TV said."

After shocks between 6.2 & 6.8.

This is the same region that had a 6.8 last week as well.
