Must be a rare case of a major earthquake close to a modern city not causing any deaths. Surprising considering the size of the event.

Probably. Epicentre was 40km west of the city, and it was a shallow quake. Plenty of aftershocks too. The time of day must have helped. If it had been rush hour, doubtless there would have been fatalities.

I have a friend in Christchurch and they had two aftershocks close together a few hours ago, that were both over 5.0 in magnitude. She's feeling pretty nervous right now. All water has to be boiled apparently, and the mains water / sewage pipes are extensively damaged. Does anyone know how long these aftershocks are likely to go on for?

Aftershocks probably not finished yet. They still think a risk of a 6 magnitude exists, which would be very troublesome.

For an illuminating graphic of quakes over the last few days, have a look here:

http://www.christchurchquakemap.co.nz/

Makes me think the UK is very lucky in never having to worry about something like this.

'Quakes 'are an issue for London'

The earthquake hazard to London has been under-appreciated, say scientists at the British Geological Survey.

They have looked at the history of tremors in the UK and have come to the conclusion that the vulnerability of its capital is far greater than many people recognise.

The South East of England is unlikely to be hit by the type of devastating event seen elsewhere in the world, but planners still need to prepare for quakes that will produce damaging shaking, the researchers argue.

Maybe they are right, but I think London has many, many things that it should be concerned over ahead of earthquakes. A 5.5 magnitude quake every 100 years?! Oh, woe, that really is no big deal.

I think Londonders should focus on fixing the tube signalling systems rather than even bothering to think about earthquakes.

Breakdown of quakes in the few days following the Christchurch one:

Apparently, aftershock number 1856 of the Canterbury Quake had its centre directly under someones farm yesterday. It was the 9th biggest aftershock at 5.0, 13km deep but the damage to their home was minimal.

Thank goodness it wasn't shallow enough to provoke a tsunami. Successive aftershocks (which would count as major quakes in themselves) are getting shallower, though, so there's still a risk.

A powerful earthquake off western Indonesia triggered a small tsunami that killed one man, damaged more than 150 homes and sent thousands of people fleeing to high ground. The 7.7 magnitude earthquake hit late yesterday and caused a a 10-foot (three-metre) wave. It was caused by the same fault, running the length of the west coast of Sumatra island, behind the 9.1-magnitude quake that triggered a massive tsunami in 2004, killing 230,000 people in a dozen countries.

Ade Edward, a disaster management agency official, said tremor was centred just 13 miles (20 kilometres) beneath the ocean floor and triggered a small tsunami that hit the island of Pagai. He said a farmer was killed and some 2,000 people were seeking shelter today in emergency camps. Crews from several ships are still unaccounted for in the Indian Ocean, he said.

The Mentawai islands, a popular surfing spot 175 miles (280 kilometres) from the coast, are sparsely populated and reports of casualties and damage have only just started arriving. The earthquake also jolted towns along Sumatra's western coast - including Padang, which last year was hit by a deadly 7.6-magnitude tremor that left more than 700 dead. It prompted mosques to blare tsunami warnings over their loudspeakers.

"Everyone was running out of their houses," said Sofyan Alawi, who also said roads leading to surrounding hills were quickly jammed with thousands of cars and motorcycles. "We kept looking back to see if a wave was coming," said 28-year-old resident Ade Syahputra.

Indonesia, the world's largest archipelago, is prone to earthquakes and volcanic activity due to its location on the Pacific 'ring of fire'. A group of Australian surfers were on the back deck of their boat, anchored in a bay off the hardest-hit Mentawai islands, when the earthquake hit. The large wave it generated caused it to smash into the vessel alongside them and a fire broke out on their boat, Rick Hallet told Australia's Nine Network.

"We threw whatever we could that floated - surfboards, fenders - then we jumped into the water," he said. "Fortunately, most of us had something to hold on to ... and we just washed in the wetlands, and scrambled up the highest trees that we could possibly find and sat up there for an hour and a half."

The death toll from a tsunami that struck western Indonesia this week rose to 343, with another 338 people still missing, a disaster official said Thursday. "Three hundred and forty-three people were killed, and 338 are still missing," West Sumatra disaster management official Ferry Faisal said.

The tsunami roared through the remote Mentawai Islands off Sumatra after a powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake Monday, wiping out entire villages. Disaster response officials said bodies were being found on beaches and coastal areas in the Mentawais, which took the full force of the tsunami.

Survivors said they had almost no warning that the 3m wall of water was bearing down on them, despite the laying of a sophisticated network of alarm buoys off the Sumatran coast. As the magnitude of the disaster became clear, many asked whether the expensive warning system - established after the 2004 Asian tsunami, which killed at least 168,000 people in Indonesia alone - failed. An official tsunami warning was issued after the quake struck, but it either came too late or did not reach the communities in most danger.

Two killed as earthquake shakes Serbia

A 5.3 magnitude earthquake has shaken central Serbia, killing two people.

The Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Centre said that the quake's epicentre was less than one mile north of the city of Kraljevo, about 94 miles southwest of the capital Belgrade. Local health authorities said at least 15 people were hurt in and around Kraljevo, a city of about 70,000.

"Two people lost their lives at Grdica, close to Kraljevo, in the earthquake during the night," Ivica Dacic, the interior minister, said, quoted by the Tanjug news agency.

Witnesses there reported that buildings were damaged and parts of the town were left without electricity or running water.

The quake was also felt in Belgrade.

The US Geological Survey measured it with a magnitude at a relatively shallow depth of 6.2 miles.

The quake was immediately followed by four other less powerful aftershocks, the Serbian institute said.

Researchers have found a previously unmapped fault was responsible for the devastating Jan. 12 earthquake in Haiti and that the originally blamed fault remains ready to produce a large earthquake.

Eric Calais, a Purdue University professor of earth and atmospheric sciences, led the team that was the first on the ground in Haiti after the magnitude 7.0 earthquake, which killed more than 200,000 people and left 1.5 million homeless.

The team determined the earthquake's origin is a previously unmapped fault, which they named the LÄogëne fault. The newly discovered fault runs almost parallel to the Enriquillo fault, which was originally thought to be the source of the earthquake, he said.

The death toll from a magnitude-6.5 earthquake in southeastern Iran rose to 7, with officials fearing that it will continue to climb, state-run Press TV said Tuesday. Felt as far away as the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, the quake was particularly strong between the cities of Zahedan and Bam. It struck late at night and hardest in mostly rural, relatively sparsely populated areas of Kerman province, officials said. "Considering the dimensions of the damage, the death toll is expected to rise," the governor general of Kerman was quoted as saying by the IRNA news agency.

Citing eyewitnesses, another state-run news agency IRNA reported that scores of people are trapped in debris of buildings that have been destroyed. Many such sites are in hard-to-reach locations, making any rescue operations even more difficult. Additionally, at least seven aftershocks struck in the four hours since the 6.5-magnitude quake hit at 10:12 p.m. Monday night, according to the Iranian Seismological Center, based at the University of Tehran, and the U.S. Geological Survey. Javad Kamali, a deputy governor for Kerman province, told the IRNA that the tremor knocked down phone lines throughout the region. Military and law enforcement workers could communicate only using wireless technology, he added.

Relief and recovery teams, some from outside the area, have converged around the village of Hosseinabad, between the towns of Fahraj and Rigan, Kamali said. In addition, IRNA reported that Kerman province's disaster council convened an emergency meeting to assess possible damage and coordinate potential aid and assistance efforts. The tremor was centered in Kerman province about 16 kilometers (9 miles) southwest of Hosein Abab, 213 kilometers (132 miles) southwest of Zahedan and about 1,075 kilometers (668 miles) south of Tehran.

Residents of Zahedan, Khash and Iranshahr in Sistan-Baluchestan province, which borders Afghanistan and Pakistan, all felt the quake, the semi-official Fars News Agency reported. Kerman Gov. Esmail Najjar told IRNA that although the earthquake's reach was significant, it hit several small villages hardest. The high-impact zone's population -- which Najjar estimated at between 5,000 and 6,000 people -- was widely dispersed. Iran lies on a series of seismic fault lines and experiences earthquakes almost daily. At times, they have had devastating consequences. Among the most notable was in December 2003, when a 6.6-magnitude quake devastated the ancient city of Bam -- also in southeast Iran -- and killed at least 30,000 people
