The first half of November 1938 was extraordinarily mild and easily the mildest first half to November on record for the CET.

CET up to 13th November 1938 was 12.2C

CET maximum mean up to 13th was 14.4C

The final CET was 9.4 and was at the time the 2nd warmest (now 3rd warmest) November on record and the warmest since 1818

Here is from the 7th of November 1938 edition of the Times about that record breaking spell.

That'll be due, no doubt, to all the gas guzzling 4x4s and intercontinental airline travel that was about in 1938 :D

Thanks for another great presentation Mr D.

Just thought I'd remind readers of what happened at Christmas 1938 following that exceptionally mild start to November.

REPEATED HEAVY FALLS OF SNOW IN THE WEEK BEFORE CHRISTMAS LED TO A THICK COVERING ON THE GROUND ESPECIALLY ACROSS SOUTHERN ENGLAND

ON THE 25TH.

Here's another piece of evidence supporting the solar activity connection to weather -- this was also a record warm period in eastern North America. Temperatures were similar in the high 60s and low 70s F in the lower Great Lakes and northeast United States.

Mr Data I love reading your posts and like you I am fascinated by past data

Just found my old London Weather book which I bought from the Old Met office in Holborn 35 years ago. (Official records recorded at Greenwich and Kew run from 1841 to 1964 in the book). According to records 70f was reached at Tottenham and 69F at Camden square on the 5th Nov 1938, December that year had the best White Christmas of the 20th century( description as follows . Snow commenced to fall on the 18th December and continued practically every day up to including 26th December being particularly heavy on the 20th and 21st. Even in Central London snow lay to a depth of 6ins . The Weather was intensely cold so that the snow persisted and the parks and secluded parts of the city presented a typical Christmas Card scene with buildings trees and ground all covered in snow. Bring it on this year. 67f recorded at Greenwich in 1847 and at Kensington on the 4th November 1946 -wow I'm sure the cold 1947 winter was not predicted then. The lowest max 25f at Kew on the 28th November 1890. Since 1923 at Kew the max temp has always exceeded 32f . For anyone disappointed that there are no cold spells on the horizon . from 1880-1964 according to records in the book at Kew there has only been one cold spell of 5 days where the daily max has been 37f or below. A 1 in 84 year event . The 1993 cold spell was truly exceptional with snow laying at Biggin Hill for 7 days and a freezing day to boot mixed in. .
