Personally I wont even go out in a thunderstorm,I think alot of it was to do with being a child, and thinking a monster was somehow trying to get at me.These things kind of stick with you,The fear and feeling Your not incontrol of the situation. But on the other hand I do find thunderstorms fascinating,"Just not when they're to close".I can watch them coming over the sea,It's a beautiful experience,The sky lighting up like a firework display, long as it's not while I'm outside I'm fine.lol

Only one thunderstorm I've ever seen in the UK has caused me worry and that was in July 1995, which had to have been supercell strength given how powerful it was.

Apart from that one instance I have always loved storms as long as I can remember, though when I was younger I had a friend who was terrified of thunder and would run inside (or under the nearest shelter) whenever he heard a wheelie bin being moved even on a cloudless day.

Although he snapped out of that and grew to like them in the end (hopefully down to my influence) I saw just how a fear like that can effect someone, so I absolutely sympathize with those of you who are effected by it.

(That and I used to have a fear of heights and car washes, so I have an idea :) )

I don't think any of the t-storms that I have experienced in my life have actually been severe enough to warrant the merest hint of fear. However, there was one close scary moment over a year ago when my next door neighbor's house was struck by lightning during a rather unremarkable storm (lightning wise). Although the downpours were very impressive indeed.

I wonder if I'll actually see any storms this year at all. I'm starting to forget what thunder and lightning actually is.

T-storms used to scare the crap out of me when i was a kid. i remember one night i think it was in late june 1986 jesus i didnt sleep a wink the fear, even my poor dog i had at the time was scared stiff and shaking like a leave. Even to this day i think i still have a slight phobia about t-storms.

I used to be scared of storms but only on a night. I remember waking up hearing the thunder crash through the house. I used to cover my ears and cover my eyes with the pillow so I couldent see the lightning.

I love a nightime storm now though.

I used to be scared stiffby storms, but as my name suggests, now I am something of a fan and usually the first to the window to see everything. I even take a fewpics when I go driving in them

Depends really where you are and where the storm is located if in a distance I`m outside in a field watching them for hours I`m totally hooked as soon as there`s that 1st rumble although when overhead it`s not a good place to be as I was yesterday :) but I did run undercover

I go in somewhere to get a great view or the house but I can`t stay there long don`t get the full affects.

Even in junior school a question came up what`s your fav things and I said thunder she thought I was crazy.

But there was this one storm that went too far in 1985 which started out a normal storm but turned severe with 2 of the most loudest lightning ever it sounded like it hit the roof of the building I was in then I ran like hell to the house then another earpopping severe strike followed by the loudest noise I`ve ever heard(I had a fear of loud noises years ago well still do with loud bangs) electric was out then of course but the fuse in the house lit up from that then it just stopped dead I`ll never forget that how it never struck anything I don`t know. :)

Im definitely not scared of thunderstorms and im a big fan of them ;)

I too am a fan but yesterday our somerset garden was struck by CG & ball lightening as a storm passed overhead :wallbash: I was observing by a window of my small music studio and had just advised my hubby to close the windows downstairs. The strike was incredible and luckily only blew out our broadband wireless box. I got a strike something that I can only describe as a hammer blow to my right arm nearest a window and static fizzle! Thankfully I had observed the early storm warnings otherwise I would have had the door to the studio shut and my headphones on. Scared I most certainly was and today a little jumpy. Please storm watchers If you are logged online or using wireless Please remember to switch your modems off. I had just disconected the computer to battery power and switched off and can only deduce that a lot of electrical charge entered my room via a gap in the window as I was not touching anything electrical at the time. Also remember to take care if you are taking photos, I nearly got a direct hit last winter whilst filming and that strike was again over our garden and looked like a nuclear bomb blast on film. Be safe fellow weather watchers and enjoy natures wickedness at it's best. ;)

Today feels tornadic.

Yes same here TRL. I can't get enough of them :wallbash: Obviously I don't do anything silly

and do my best to stay out of danger, but I'm certainly not frightened.

The only thing that I do worry about sometimes, is maybe by wishing too much for something

I may be inviting trouble.

Isn't fear and scary moment kinda the same thing?

As a child I was terrified of thunderstorms - hated them with a passion. As I got older and read more into them the phobia started to ease a bit. I suppose the major turning point in terms of fear was the thunderstorm on July 3rd 2001, it was the most violent storm I'd ever seen, and ever have seen. After that most storms seemed to pale in comparison, and I don't feel scared at all during a thunderstorm. I still feel nervous a little if there is a thunderstorm that is moving my way, however during yesterday's storm I loved every minute of it. Funnily enough, it was always lightning and not thunder that bothered me as a child.

Joe, I was scared of storms until I was around your age (had spent many a childhood night in my parents bed and many a night as a 10-15 year old cowering under covers) . It was the August of 1993 that I witnessed a CG strike approx 50 yards away in the field behind our house. Far from terrify me, it cured my scared-ness and I've been hooked ever since!

the really powerful storms that form in cold air masses, that havevery frequent lightning are the ones that scare me the least, itsthe ones that drift up from France in humid sultry air that scare me the most, its not the storm more the long approach of it when the air goes really close and dark.

The only time when i get 'scared' during thunderstorms is when CG lightning is right over your house because the fear of your house gets struck or hits a tree(trees are right outside of my house). CC lightning overhead i'm not too fussed about nor sheet lightning. Though i don't mind CG lightning being a few miles away. I got more of a fasonation of storms rather than a phobia. Other reason i don't get a phobia perhaps because 'severe' storms rarely happen here, from what i remember i only witness 2 severe storms one was in Autumn(think it was then but some other person from T&W can correct me if i am wrong) 2000 when it was quite a foggy night then we had a storm consists of sheet lightning and the one on the 31st August 2005.

It's interesting to hear about peoples phobias of thunderstorms. I started a thread dedicated to the subject a few weeks ago, not sure if it is still active?.

I have denoted from most peoples replies that thier phobia started from childhood and possibly was influenced by other family members or parents. I have a grandmother who is really scared of thunderstorms and hides mirrors cutlery you name it, if it's metal she hides it away then goes and locks herself in her bedroom and listens to her walkman so she cannot hear the thunder ect... This possibly led to my father having a phobia also, when i was a child and there were storms overnight he used to wake us up claiming he was just checking we were ok, then ask if we wanted a cup of tea. We'd end up sitting in the kitchen with my dad looking out the window from the kitchen table, going Ooooh that was a close one and panicing. Once it had passed we'd head off back to bed. I have never really had a phobia more of an interest and a need to know / learn more about storms. My friends little nephew who is now almost 5 yrs old loves thunderstorms, when he was little from the age of 1 onwards he'd come and watch them with my friend and myself without getting frightened as we'd tell him there was nothing to fear and he'd be safe under cover with us. This has led to the oposite of a phobia for him now and strangely on numerous occasions tells my friend or myself that it is going to thunder sometimes 3 or 4 hours in advance. I have no idea how he knows, but he's generally correct about 85% of the time. It's also led to him during a really big storm laughing at the clouds and almost taunting them with every bang of thunder. The downside to having a child wo adores loud bangs ect, is he always wants loads of loud fireworks at bonfire night, which add up to a small fortune! :)
