Day 9 was an amazing experience for the Netweather Team. The day started early at 345am with a nasty storm at Childress, straight line 60-80mph winds with vivid Cg Lightning.

post-24-1178685440_thumb.jpg - Pretty Close

Me & Nick knew the squall line would come into play today but targeted an area between Abilene & Lubbock for Discrete Supercells ahead of the approaching Squall line from hell. This thing was marching eastwards and munching everything in its path. We initially moved towards the line with 54f temps and everyone was shivering in the car, we moved down the squall taking a peep inside a few times before running into the car as the gust front came towards us.

We always tried not to go too far south down the line as surface temps in South East Oklahoma were at 78f with South Easterly winds. When the 1st cells went up ahead of the line they quickly became Supercellular, we knew we only had limited time before the squall hauled them in. Our cell had a great Pendant shape and was near Throckmorton (Tx) We hauled towards it and then it came into view, a rotating Mesocyclone just North of Throckmorton.

We only had 20 minutes on this cell before the squall ate it up, then as the squall came towards us we managed to outrun it about 10 miles in front and was treated to an amazing sight.

The best part of the day was watching the reaction of the other 5 when this shelf appeared, every one of them had jaws on the ground!

We were a little way off when the tornado was reported. Apparently it formed pretty early on in the supercell's lifetime and it didn't produce after that. We spoke with a spotter who said he had been watching it for 45 minutes with no sighting. That was at around 22:00 UTC, the tornado was reported about 50 minutes prior to that so I guess to have caught that one you had to be on the storm from initiation.

Fantastic shots yet again, incredible, thats one giant 'Jelly fish' as my daughter once said.

Even with 'slight' risk days, spectacular events do occur..!

Hi Ian, stormtroopers here.

We have really enjoyed the tales, the shelf is amazing. Have you done this kind of thing before as you look familiar, have you been on tv?

Good luck with the supercell hunting, when does a cell become a supercell?

Keep safe, hope the steaks are to your fancy.

Good to see things working out well over there.

Isn't there someone who could photoshop the shelf cloud pics into one long panorama??(with permission of course)

It would be beyond me, sadly!
