We are heading south to get the warmer temps, grungefest here in Central Kansas, the tornado damage we have passed on the way is pretty spectacular, trailers rammed into the side of buildings, snapped trees and power lines sheared off, roads flooded and fields have turned into lakes. Devastating scenes here in Kansas it has to be said. State of Emergency in Greensburg, we had to let a Supercell go yesterday as it tracked near to the town again, we later caught it near Pratt and had the most spectacular chase down red dirt roads, this is one video you have to watch, wall cloud and rotation crossing the road in front of us.

Paul Sherman

made the news over here too mate. looks pretty bad in some places. From BBC

At least eight people died in Kiowa County, where Greensburg is located, and one in the neighbouring Pratt County, as winds of up to 250mph (400km/h) tore buildings from their foundations and uprooted trees. The tornado was described as a "wedge", a particularly wide formation said to be - in this instance - at least one mile in diameter.

Low level shea risn't quite a simpressive a sprevious days but given the jet streak still has quite strong winds this is still a severe set-up.

New cell has exploded upwards by the way in the SW part of OK, close to the Texas border...also very powerful supercell heading towards SW KS, its the western cell of the mass of cells heading into South Kansas and its also the strongest from the looks of the radar. Lots of cells are pumping out cloud tops of 45-55,000 feet as wlel by the way so they should all be visable for miles to the SW.

Tornadic cell moved north of Woodward in nw OK, this town was devastated by an F4 in May 1947 (around the 9th I believe).

Another potentially severe tornadic cell forming SSW of there near the OK-TX border. All of this activity likely to drift northeast or NNE for a while, then expand and move more east later this afternoon local time (current time 3 pm CDT).

Still think that 30-50 miles west of Enid OK is the target zone for eventual major tornado development.

Team is probably heading south through various levels of TRW located between the cells I am describing here, and other tornadic cells closer to Wichita KS. Some gaps in this line at present, hopefully with all the bad weather and previous storm damage including a fair amount of flooding, they can shoot through by 4-5 pm and be in position for what looks like a fairly widespread outbreak around 5-7 pm.

Temp (28), dewpoint (21) and strong SSE wind 25-40 mph at Enid look promising also, satellite presentation appears typical of 2-3 hours before tornadic outbreak with discontinuous line of developing cells not yet at supercell levels. Once this fires up, conventional parameters only moderately helpful because the squall line will create its own meso-scale environment and there is very good dew point contrast between the Gulf air and the dry slot (5-7 C dew points there in w KS and nw OK panhandle).

Expect a very active end to the day around 01-02z.

I agree with your ideas Roger, for what its worth that cell near the Ok/TX border is from the line of CU developing that i was mentioning about 2hrs ago, needs to be watched a sit heads to the NNE.

(large hail falling now in Greensburg.)

This area has been hammered this weekend, 'ping-pong' sized hail was at Greensburg 20-30 mins ago, cleanup operation must be a nightmare!

On the subject of Friday's Greensburg tornado disaster, reporters on scene are saying damage looks as severe as the Moore OK tornado in May 99, which was eventually re-classified F6 ... so this may be either an F5 or F6 that hit on Friday evening.

One of the things that has gone missing is a large meteorite that was housed in a museum building.

Even by the normal standards the damage scenes in Greensburg are quite alarming. Basically the whole town (I was close when I said 2,000, it was 1,600) is levelled and a huge debris field now. Can you imagine the death toll if people in that part of the USA were not tornado-prepared and listening closely to warnings on Friday? Of course nowadays, a lot of people understand how to boot up their internet radar connection and watch that too.

On Saturday, it got rather lost in the news, but Sweetwater OK was hit by what looked like an F3 on video, and the high school there was largely destroyed. Not too bad otherwise, the track was a glancing blow for that town luckily.

Absolutely , especially that these tornadoes hit well after dark and were disguised as most of the time they were rain-wrapped!..
