The high- speed bands of wind that are tje jet streams have an important influence on the development of weather systems. Particularly the growth, motion and decay of depressions. Although often invisible the jets sometimes marked by a readily recogizable pattern of clouds

The jet streams that concern u here are the strong westerly winds that lie at the top of the troposphere, close to where there are breksin the level of the tropopause, the inversion at the base of the stratosphere. These breaks occur near major fronts, particulary near the polar front, across which there is a marked temperature contrast and on which most depressions form.

Jet stream clouds are generally forms of Cirrus [because of the low temperatures that prevail at their height], and the clouds are often elongated along the lenght of the jet, thus appearing as cirrus radiatus. But jet streams are also regions of extremely high wind shear between the jet itself and the surrounding, slower moving air, so the cirrus often occurs in the form of billows [cirrus undulatus], which run at right- anlgles ti the main direction of flow.

As mentioned, jet streasms have a profound effect on the development of depressions, and often lie in an S- Shaped curve above the main central region of a depression. The different directions in which the clouds are moving at different heights is an excellent indicator of an approaching [and receeding] depression.

A jet often lies at the forward edge of the advancing wedge of warm air, apporx parallel to the warm front. At high levels the wind veers [in the northern hemisphere], relative to the lower wind. This leads to the formation of crossed winds: winds at high and low levels being roughly at right- angles to one another. This is a classic sign of an approaching warm front. At low levels, cumulus clouds [often cumulus humulis] may be carried along by a southerly wind ahead of the surface front, while the high jet- stream cirrus fibratus, cirrus uncinus, and cirrostratus fibratus] may be seen streaming away, perhaps towards the east. When the speed of the jet stream is particularly high, their may be a dramatic change in direction close to the jet streamlevel.

The same sort of change in wind directions occurs with the clouds at the actual warm front: the winds carrying the middle level altocumulus and altostratus are veered relative to the nimbostratus, stratocumulus, or other low clouds. Similarly, the wind veers yet again between the middle levels and the higher jet stream

A similar change, but in the opposite direction, occurs in the region of the cold front, where again the jet stream is roughtly parallel to the front. How the wind backs and increases with increasing height. The low clouds may be borne on a northwesterly wind, while the high cirrus races away to the northeast, carried by a southwesterly jet.

As for the rest of the week lows look to be taking quite a S-ly track with strong winds in the south with plenty of rain to come too not as we`ve had much yet this morning very little infact.

Ha! Been a long time since we've had big gusts like this, that a mere breeze is classed as a full-blown gale

We are gusting 30mph for the first time in over a month aswell, not used to this, stuff is blowing over in the garden.

Looking at the charts I doubt if I will see significant rain, in fact I will be lucky to get 10mm if any, on the other hand you will get a soaking and Scotland will be a green and pleasant land
