A snow pic from West Cornforth, County Durham, not a million miles from me. Just like to point out that West Cornforth is not too high up, so the snow seen in the pic was once upon a time possible even on low ground.

Both bang on, it was the 78/79 winter.

Snow was like that in my home town Newton Aycliffe too, I was only 7 at the time but I remember just how bad it was clearly. Photographs like the one above just ram it home really. Little did I know at the time just how special it was.

I thought possibly around 16-20 February 1979 (following the snowstorm around the 14th) or mid March 1979 (following the snowstorm that deposited 46cm at Newcastle)

It will be one of those two TWS, as the photo says c1978 (around 1978)

Will we ever see those days again?

Will we !$**

I hope so but I doubt it.

We were talking two feet of level snow that winter (can you imagine that these days, in fact can you imagine it at all?) then drifts on top.

Think after that February 1991 gave us a good 30-40cm.

Nope, ain't looking good, 15cm is a success story these days.

I unfortunately at that time had a paper round in my home town of Yarm. There was at least 40cm of snow there which lasted on the ground for about a fortnight so I had to do it all on foot. I had a max/min thermometer that you reset with magnets (back in the analogue days!) in the garden and recall doing one particular delivery round in -11C after an overnight low of -14C. Not worth for £6.50 a week I can tell you now. I'm lucky to have my toes intact as an adult.

Was chatting to my dad about the 1979 snow event. He told me that 2 feet of snow was actually deposited in the heart of Durham City itself, and that you could actually SKI down Claypath.

Yes, I forgot about the potent NE'ly on 31 December 1978 leading into 1 January 1979; pretty much the ideal setup for a good dumping of snow in the North East. Even Lancaster was affected by it (January 1979 had 21 days of lying snow, which is vastly higher than any other month in the Lancaster records)

There may well have been more than just the two, given the heavy snowstorm then, the ones later in January, the one around 14 February and the one in mid March- that's four already!

The two photos I originally posted have changed location, so here's another couple of links to them:
