Ok, Don't get too excited, it's just a forecast but Solarham has Kp6 slotted for December 4th.

Currently Bz about -10 deg (southward) and KP at 4. Solar wind speed is still fairly low at around 340km/s but should pick up. Hopefully 600km/s or above.

Forecast (Solarham) is still for Kp6 tonight and tomorrow so looking good for later.

Warm thermals, it's Baltic out there!...

Bit of a non event overnight (Kp4) and I was clouded out anyway.

Solar wind speed now up to 500km/ s and Bz bouncing about with spells of -10 deg. Looks as if the US is getting a good show atm.

Looking at the expected values compared the observed ones its remarkable how far ahead of pace this minimum is. We have already hit the floor regarding sunspot numbers, this is about a year and a half ahead of schedule. Thanks to a very quiet November, which looks like continuing this month, solar flux is also a bit ahead of schedule.

Are we now in solar minimum and if so how long will it last, or will it recover? Probably the most interesting period of solar observations for decades coming in the next few years.

We must remember also the predicted level of cycle 25 is lower that this present cycle. Levels not seen in modern times last 200years or more. This is a great opportunity for science to better understand solar impacts over time

It must have been touch and go whether the spec was going to be counted, but in the end it wasn't & we are now at 5 spotless days, 92 for 2017.

Not quite there yet

"At the time of counting spots, spots were observed in 1 active region using 2K resolution (SN: 11) and in 0 active regions using 1K resolution (SN: 0) SDO images on the visible solar disk."

Still a tiny number though and solar flux is staying low at 67.9

I think that "spot" will be gone by tomorrow. Hopefully that's it then for a few (well, 6!) days so we hit 100 spotless days this year. Wouldn't it be great if next year the spots all but go and we have a decent winter :)

Spotless again. If 2018 follows the Oct-Dec trend of 2017 I'd expect well over 200 spotless days.

Apparently NASA are holding a press conference on Thursday, much speculation about planets, alien spaceships and the like. Wouldn't it be nice if it's actually to announce they've finally got a handle on how the Sun works, what can be expected from the next solar cycle, or cycles, that we're heading for a minimum deeper than the Maunder and we can expect 3ft of snow this winter and every winter for the foreseeable. I can dream.....

The announcement was made on the Thursday just gone. I’ve not looked into it yet..

Lol. It takes time for news to filter through my fog of 'oh my god it's nearly christmas' panic.
