SOLAR FLARE CAUSES RARE 'MAGNETIC CROCHET': On Nov. 5th at 22:12 UT, the magnetic canopy of sunspot AR1890 erupted, producing a brief but intense X3-class solar flare. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory recorded the extreme ultraviolet flash:

Radiation from the flare caused a surge in the ionization of Earth's upper atmosphere--and this led to a rare magnetic crochet.

BIG SUNSPOT FACES EARTH: AR1890, one of the biggest sunspots of the current solar cycle, has turned almost directly toward Earth. This raises the possibility of geoeffective eruptions in the days ahead. NOAA forecasters estimate a 45% chance of M-class flares and a 10% chance of X-flares on Nov. 7th.

ANOTHER X-FLARE: Big sunspot AR1890 is crackling with strong flares. The latest, which peaked on Nov. 8th at 04:32 UT, registered X1 on the Richter Scale of Flares. (Note: Earlier, we underestimated the intensity of this flare as M.8.)http://www.spaceweather.com/

The new CME prediction model released by the Goddard Space Flight Center is calling for a direct Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) impact by late November 12th. The plasma cloud was flung into space and towards Earth by the X1 solar flare last night. Geomagnetic storming will be possible once the plasma cloud arrives. More updates in the days ahead. Maybe a glancing blow now..

 

Update: A faint CME associated with that plume could deliver a glancing blow to Earth's magnetic field on Nov. 12th or 13th. Stay tuned for further analysis.

WAITING FOR THE NEXT FLARE: Solar activity has been low for 24+ hours, but the forecast calls for flares. Two large, complex sunspots are transiting the Earthside of the sun with mixed-polarity magnetic fields that harbor energy for strong eruptions. The next big flare will probably come from one of these two circled regions:

NOAA forecasters estimate a 60% chance of M-class flares and a 30% chance of X-flares during the next 24 hours. Flares from AR1890 could be particularly geoeffective. Because of the way the sun's magnetic field spirals through interplanetary space, AR1890 is magnetically connected to our planet. This time-lapse was captured on the morning of November 11, 2013. It is suspected that two CMEs (Coronal Mass Ejections) on Nov 8th and 10th from two separate X-class solar flares combined to form one cloud of plasma. The interaction of this energy with earths magnetosphere created the following visual feast.

 The headline is misleading. The sun is not going to flip, the sun's magnetic field polarity at the poles is going to flip and the simple explanation here for how it happens is quite useful. Whatever, solar scientists have been weatching and scratching their heads for a long time because this solar cycle has been a major eniggma, and the switch has been a long drawn out and bizarre affair. See archives for more background info. What concerns me here is the attempt to blame the magnetic polarity swap causing " intergalactic weather fronts" I have never come across such drivel in the mainstream media concerning space weather... Shameful reporting. Maybe this is another poor attemp at blaming anything other than cometary 'action at a distance' effects on the Sun.
