The Earth's magnetic field, generated some 3,000km below our feet in the liquid iron core, threads through the whole planet and far into space – protecting life and satellites from harmful radiation from the sun. But this shielding effect is far from constant, as the field strength varies significantly in both space and time.

That's interesting, PM...It implies, quite reasonably I think, that a planet that has no liquid iron core, will be very unlikely to harbour life...?

Solar flux is down again to 67.6 too. During solar minimum the solar flux bottoms at around 65-70 so we are essentially there if we get this number more consistently.

It would appear as other have rightly said, we are entering another very quiet period. Should (hopefully) make for another couple of interesting Winters if the theory holds true.

The last adjusted reading was 66.1. 67.4 was the last observed flux, but you have to homogenise the numbers to account for the Earth's varying distance from the Sun during the year. This is the lowest solar flux value since the previous solar minimum.

Todays update:

"Solar flux at 20h UTC on 2.8 GHz was 65.8 (decreasing 3.9 over the previous solar rotation, solar flux at 1 AU was 64.6, very close to the lowest solar flux value in recorded history). "

I fully expect that we will see lower figures and would not be surprised to see sub 60. We have not had such a low minimum during the 'recorded' era so totally new setups for us all to digest and their associated impacts

When did records begin? Its an interesting fact, but would mean a lot more if records began 200 years ago as opposed to 20 years ago for example.

You are quite right. If memory servs  the lowest actual figure we can obtain is 69.5

It's a bit below that, but there is a floor certainly. Last night's final Penticton reading was 64.3 which is the lowest since Dec 2008.

Sunspot numbers in some form go way back to the last grand minimum. However our ability to record flux values certainly do not and probably only go back 50 years at most and certainly not back to the last grand minimum.

Talking of Penticton readings, I used to be able to access the Penticton daily readings on Solarham but am no longer able to.  The table of daily stats. is not populated any more.  How can I access these readings?

Thanks in advance

David

I've not been on here for a while. Have there been any new scientific papers about any possible direct link between the solar cycle and temps in the British Isles. I'd be fascinated to see if there is an 11 / 22 year pattern relating directly to the solar cycle.
