Just outside the top 20 of strongest solar flares since 1978:

http://www.solarcycle24.com/top20.htm

We are currently bumping along the bottom of the Solar Cycle but, as I 've mentioned before, huge solar flares can occur at any time of the cycle. This particular strong flare unfortunatley wasn't pointing our way but there is still room to be hopeful as there are two weeks remaining of sunspot 929 facing us.

Still plenty of activity.... M6 Flare at 08:20 today.

Let's hope this keeps up as the sunspot begins to face Earth.

Hey, Kar..

'bout time we had some decent activity. X9 and now M6. Should be approx 2/3 days before any glancing blows are Earthbound. (if anymore big flares occur)

Here's the movie of the M6. Lasts a good hour and a half. http://www.lmsal.com/solarsoft/latest_even...0802_sxilm.html

An as type this the flux is rising again, currently C1 ;)

Very true Mondy... There is currently a G1 geomagnetic storm in progress with KP5 and Interplanetary Mag. Field

Bz: 1.7 nT South, all due to the current coronal hole.

Now what we really want is some CME's from M/X Class flares to coincide with the next coronal hole on 20 - 22 December. ;)

Oh and clear skies!

From Spaceweather.com

Although the explosions were not squarely Earth-directed, we might not completely escape their effects. A series of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) could deliver glancing blows to Earth's magnetic field tonight and tomorrow. Northern sky watchers should be alert for auroras.

Give us some of that X9, KP still at 5 this evening and it's cleariDoh a dumb swear filter got the better of me

Love the recent pics people have taken:

Camera batteries charged up, CF cards empty and I'm ready to go at a moment's notice. Could be a long night tonight!

Just looked out, sky reasonable but the moon has just cleared the rooftops, any haze at all and it will be a pain.

Edit: Your second link Mondy looks as if there might be another sunspot lurking just over the limb - possibly connected by that fillament to 930

Not sure if I've posted this before but one or two Skandanavian web/skycams here. The weather there doesn't

look too good though.

Those pics are amazing Mondy!

So what effect other than the lights is this flare going to have?

In all truth, fp, i think these current flares have struck too soon..

If the X9 or even the M6 flare had occured two/three days later, very good chance aurora would be visible over the UK. At the moment all the flares have done is cause radio blackouts and unsettled the geomagnetic field..

Still, the conditions are fairly good tonight for a possible sighting..the Bz is tilting, the Kp index is 5 and maybe, just maybe, a glancing blow from X9 will help ;)

So what effect other than the lights is this flare going to have?

The flare wont have much effect on us as it wasn't earth directed. Any northern lights tonight will be caused mainly by solar wind from a coronal hole.

This site will give you some idea of what can happen, other than the aurora i.e. radio blackouts etc., as a result of big solar flares. http://www.sec.noaa.gov/NOAAscales/

Just as i typed that the Bz was pointing down quite sharply. Approx -7 component. Now back to steady, but as the description below says:

HINT:

If the Bz points sharply south, it may create an opening in earths magnetosphere allowing the solar wind to flow in and reach earths atmosphere.

Of all the times to have a forum upgrade!!

X6.5 occured at 6.45pm - watched the spike rise with my own eyes, there and then - just about wet my knickers as it reached the X-mark...here it is:

Edit: http://www.spacew.com/www/aurvis.gif has now gone brown and just touching N Scotland mainalnd

Clouding over from the west all evening - except for Moray/Aberdeenshire which will be covered by the wee small hours. And rain following. Not clear til afterlunch tomorrow. Git.

Fiddlesticks?? :wallbash:

On the plus side it does look like we're in for a spell of activity - so fingers crossed it will coincide with a clear late evening :)
