AURORAS OVER YELLOWKNIFE: It was just before midnight on Aug. 25th when a crack opened in Earth's magnetic field. Solar wind poured through the gap, fueling auroras over Yellowknife, Canada:

SEPTEMBER KICKS OFF AURORA SEASON: Studies by NASA show that September is one of the best months of the year for auroras. So far so good. On Sept. 1st, skies over Alaska erupted in colour:

RELUCTANTLY RED AURORAS: It's not easy for Earth's atmosphere to make red auroras. Even long-time Arctic photographers and tour guides rarely see them. Yet, on Sept. 3rd, there they were.

"At 2.30 a.m. on Sept. 8th, I woke up and had a look outside," says photographer Thomas Kast of Oulu, Finland. "Wowsers, nearly the whole sky was full of auroras! Got the camera and ran onto the front yard. This is a photo from the back of my camera, when a strong green band rose quickly and brightened the night sky."
