Sharp rise in Ap and flux, looks like we're getting a sunspot soon.

Hopefully an old SC24 rather than 25?

Neither, the uptick in magnetic activity is caused by a pair of Earth-facing coronal holes. There are no active regions currently facing the Earth. Of course, as soon as I post this, one will appear.

SOLAR WIND SPARKS AURORAS OVER THE USA: For the 3rd day in a row, a fast-moving stream of solar wind is blowing around Earth. This is causing minor geomagnetic storms and auroras as far south as the US-Canadian border. Last night in Michigan, a green ribbon rippled over Copper Harbour:

see the thermosphere is just upticking a tad, anyone know if this is to do with the coronal holes mentioned by @Yarmy?

or is it a sign of something else?!

Yeah, not sure what the reason is for that!

It has been rising steadily for a few months now  since it reached a low of about 2.3 in August as far as I remember. Don't know why unless that was the minimum point. Then again it did the same thing last December; Dropped to 3.15 and then rose steadily again for a few months.

could be associated with distance..?

I know solar flux is measured at face value but then there's a correction value applied to make it relative to standard, as it varies with the elliptical orbit of the Earth round the Sun...

Coronal holes, wind speeds up to 600 km/dec raise the kp index to 6 which is storm level  thus leads to thermosphere warming. Will most likely cool down again.

I too was going to ask that. The thermosphere was coolest in the last cycle around the time of proper minimum. This time though you can see that activity is through the floor but it’s been warming.

Thank -10, makes sense and I was on the right track! May I ask if there's a specific website where you manage to mine these nuggets of info? Ta!

The sun is certainly not boring during solar minimums, coronal holes can create magnetic storms, g class flares, auroras etc: i think the bigger the coronal hole the stronger the wind speeds, if its earth facing then its bullseye, usually leads to earthquakes too.

Ah right, have seen one of her vids where she says we're well overdue a protracted solar minimum a la Dalton / maunder etc..
