I can't see us getting to 200+ days this year. When there have been spots, they've been hanging around long enough to keep the spotless count down.

It's been nearly two weeks between spotless day's, we haven't been able to string a spotless run along for that amount of time yet.

In theory the frequency should increase the further we go into the year. If we are running at over 50% now, it's not a stretch to push that.

At the moment though, impossible to string more than 10 day's spotless.

Sadly true. I was hoping we would reach 100 spotless days in June but this chance has long gone.

Today we have three spots and the solar flux has reached 77.

Yep, suspect 150 spotless days is probably the most we are likely to get. More realistically around the 120 is a safer bet

The solar flux today has risen to 82 - quite dismal!

If sunspots do affect our weather and can lead to warmer weather in winter, I would rather it be high now, and come Autumn Winter be lower flux and spotless!

That's the only positive I can see from this but it may mean that the current cycle will not be as quiet as we were hoping.

We are considerably lower than the last minimum. There will always be bursts of activity and this present activity is still low compared to past cycles Have faith in a couple of days we will be spotless again.

Given the phenomenal amount of thermal inertia contained within the oceanic-atmospheric system as a whole, I simply can't see how a few spotless/spotty days are either here or there, meteorologically speaking...? IMO, teleconnections are far more down-to-Earth.

That's great news to hear that the sun is blank again and that the solar flare count has gone down to 70.

So hopefully 100 days will be reached in July. The % of spotless days has dropped from earlier in the year.

This is fantastic news that the solar flux has gone down to normal levels.  Hopefully it will go further down

But why is it 'fantastic news', Katrine...what's it going to do?

Hope so, but need a good run of spotless days now before it's interrupted again.

Spaceweather.com says on it's website that the sun is rapidly descending into deep solar minimum.  It also states that by the end of 2018, the spotless intervals will be measured in weeks.
