Activity has certainly picked up over the last 2 days, with lot's of new active regions turning to face Earth over the next few days.

EMERGING ACTIVE REGION: For the past few days, a sunspot group on the farside of the sun has been crackling with flares and propelling CMEs into space. Now, this still-unnumbered active region moving onto the Earthside of the sun. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory caught it coming over the eastern limb on June 20th (circled):

By week's end, the emerging sunspot will reveal itself fully to telescopes on Earth. If it has a complex magnetic field that harbors energy for strong eruptions, Earth-directed flares could be in the offing. http://www.spaceweather.com/

SOLAR WIND: A fast-moving (~600 km/s) stream of solar wind is buffeting Earth's magnetic field this weekend. Reports of high-latitude auroras are few, however, because of the nearly full Moon and midnight sun around the Arctic Circle. SOLAR WIND CONTINUES BLOWING: For the second day in a row, a fast stream of solar wind is blowing around Earth. NOAA forecasters estimate a 30% chance of polar geomagnetic storms on June 23rd in response to the buffeting. http://www.spaceweather.com/

A C4.4 flare was detected from sunspot 1777 & a C7.3 solar flare from around Sunspot 1778 early'er, Which are both earth facing.

STRONG GEOMAGNETIC STORM IN PROGRESS: A strong (Kp=7) geomagnetic storm is in progress on June 28-29 as Earth passes through a region of south-pointing magnetism in the solar wind. The storm has sparked Northern Lights photographed in the USA as far south as Kansas. Christian Begeman sends this picture from a farm outside Hartford, South Dakota:

"A clear sky allowed me to the Northern Lights dancing in southeast South Dakota around the midnight hour tonight," says Begeman. "It was quite the show."

High-latitude sky watchers should remain alert for auroras in the hours ahead. Solar wind conditions continue to favor geomagnetic activity. http://www.spaceweather.com/

WEEKEND GEOMAGNETIC STORM: On June 28, Earth passed through a region of south-pointing magnetism in the solar wind. The encounter set off one of the finest geomagnetic storms of the current solar cycle. At its peak on June 29th, the strong (Kp=7) storm filled the sky over Alberta Canasa with bright green auroras:

"With advance warning from Spaceweather.com, I headed out Friday night to a wind farm near my rural home, to take images of what I hoped would be an all-sky aurora. It did not disappoint!" says photographer Alan Dyer of Drumheller, Alberta. M-CLASS SOLAR FLARE: Big sunspot AR1785 near the sun's southeastern limb poses a growing threat for solar flares. This morning, July 3rd at 0708 UT, it produced an M1.5-class solar flare and hurled a CME into space (not Earth-directed).
