i dont want to start a climate change debate in this thread but this article is very interesting

http://www.newscient...ope-on-ice.html

yes indeed theres absolutely evidence of the jet being dissplaced during minimum also it seems the jet on the sun finds it hard to do what it does in a maximum i wonder if there connected aswell.

since the weakening of the sun it has been picture of jet being futher south.

i think it would be nice if we had info from other minimums to see what happen to the jet back then,

my guess would be about the same.:p

intresting read thanks :drinks:

3 day's blank, but there is an active region on the eastern limb showing up on the stereo behind. Will it make it onto the visible disc?

Solar flux also dropped back th 74

4 days blank, but old sunspot 1057 is about to rotate into view. Will it contain spots, or will it just be a plage.

5 day's blank, old sunspot 1057 has now rotated onto the eastern limb, and is currently a spotless plage.

6 days blank, still no sign of any spots from the plage former 1057.

Might be worth checking out http://spaceweather.com/ later,

STUNNING IMAGES OF THE SUN: Take a deep breath. You may need it later today when NASA releases First Light images from the Solar Dynamic Observatory, which reveal the sun in better-than-IMAX detail. NASA insiders say the images are breathtaking, literally. Return here after 2:15 pm EDT for the unveiling.

Should provide some stunning images, looks greeat already.

7 Day's blank, but the former sunspot 1057 which was a plage has produced a tiny pore which will most likely counted as a spot later today.

8 day's blank,

Old sunspot 1057 produced a tiny pore for a while yesterday, but vanished very quickly.

Perhaps this is the start of a decent run of spotless days again. I wonder how many of the sunspots this year would have been counted 50 or a 100 years ago. Certainly not all of them

Hi Jon,

If you go to the NIA website http://daltonsminima.wordpress.com/ & click on the link

http://daltonsminima.wordpress.com/dati-sole-in-diretta/, they try to do a fair count as how it would have been done before the space age era.

9 day's blank,

Not surprised to see it blank, but not for this long. All solar indicators where showing signs of quieting down since it's hight in January/February.

How long will it continue is the ext question.

When is the maximum now predicted to occur Steve?

To be honest, I don't think anyone know's. The general consensus is 2013, but there are some very credible theories on it being as early as this year.

10 day's blank, into double figures. Only 14 day's to go before we pass the 800 day mark for cycle24.

11 day's blank, but the sun is still active

POISED TO ERUPT: Already this month, the sun has produced two of the biggest eruptions in years. They occurred on April 13th and April 19th when magnetic filaments became unstable and exploded. Could it happen again today? A prominence on the eastern limb of the sun (photo) resembles the precursors of those two earlier blasts. Readers with solar telescopes are encouraged to monitor developments.

Thanks for your reply to my when is maximum question — still some time to go.

Will these eruptions have any effect on the earth in terms of interference or anything Steve?

If they are directed at Earth, then yes.

But this latest one is on the eastern limb, so it should just harmlessly go out into space.

Is it normal to have as many as 13 days blank at this stage of cycle 24? :unknw:

Hi Snowray,

Not sure to be honest with you. I do know that this particular cycle is certainly different to any cylce observed since the space age.

I think though if we continue blank or almost blank through the Summer, then there is every chance this cycle could be aborted.

Keep an eye on any spots developing in the northern hemisphere, they might belong to cycle25

I find this lack of solar activity truly fascinating, if it carries on like this for a few years our governments will be encouraging us to burn fossil fuels to keep earth's temp from dropping 3 degrees in the next 100 years :)

Looks like the blank run has come to an end with Noaa counting a tiny speck.

Certainly is interesting Nath. I am just glad there is somrthing else to focus on rather than the constant banging of the global warming drum.
