I dont know very much about the sun but i do look in on this thread fairly often to see is the sun remaining quiet. It really interests me how this will effect our climate. About 2 or 3 yrs ago i read an ariticle called "Is the sun about to save us from global warming?" Thats when i first found out that the sun was going to enter a very quite phase and in the article

e they said it could last at least 30 yrs. Dont know how accurate that kind of prediction is of course, but interesting times it must be said.

Solar activity will remain at very low levels.

Something is sturring though, taken from http://spaceweather.com/ .

SOLAR ACTIVITY: Something has exploded on the farside of the sun. Late yesterday, Dec. 4th, a billion-ton coronal mass ejection (CME) billowed over the sun's western limb. Click on the image to view a movie of the cloud recorded by the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory:

The blast site could be one of two farside active regions currently under surveillance by NASA's STEREO spacecraft, but those active regions don't seem to be in the right place to hurl a CME over the sun's western limb. The source might reveal itself in the days ahead as the sun's rotation turns unseen territory toward STEREO--or toward Earth. Stay tuned.

It never really woke up, More akin to waking up in the night for a pee.

Steve

Thanks for link.

I have to say folks although it is quiet it is having a big effect on our climate.....but longer term I am very concerned about this current state...it is much deeper than expected. Most know my thoughts on longterm pattern...we will be in 'obvious' global cooling by 2015....and it may be sooner. This solar cycle and lunar phase suggests that. Look at the jetstream....it is more south clearly and that is a longterm trend IMHO.

BFTP

I would tend to agree with you but I'm not totally convinced yet. I'll be looking at how the global temperature anomalies react after the El Nino subsides. A drop to pre 98 behaviour would do it for me.

How come we went down a day?

I think that was a mistake by Solarcycle24.com, started their count a bit to early.

We are currently on 13 day's, 256 for 2009 76%.

http://spaceweather.com/.

We should know tomorrow whether the activity on the limb is a spot or just a plage. finger crossed.

if we make 20 days this period will be in the tables as one of the longest spells, the last one i remember was 50 days or something.

Hi, if your talking about this table http://www.meteoputignano.com/SenzaMacchie.gif , then yes, the last time spotless day streak was recorded, was 52 day's back in August.

Even if cycle 24 really got going now the cooling effect would still be felt over next 3 years.

As for the effects we will see them start this year. This was predicted earlier this year in northwest Europe forum.

Reasons are,

1. The prolonged solar minimum has a slight lag of 2-3 years. Normally this lag happens as the cycle is beginning to recover and is not normally from such a deep low cycle. This lag has started but the sunspot cycle remains at minimum.

2. The extra cosmic rays are allowing better chances of stratosphere warming. Low solar wind allows cosmic rays to reach Earth.

This winter will be more like an eighties winter.

I don't want to put a hoodoo on it (here we go again http://nwstatic.co.uk/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif ), but.....we only need another 8 spotless days this year, to beat 2008 then?

Fingers crossed! We've certainly had some ups and downs this year, haven't we? http://nwstatic.co.uk/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif

Hope I haven't spoken too soon...... :whistling::rofl:http://nwstatic.co.uk/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif

I hope they all get stranded in blizzards at Copenhagen airport next week! :cold:

Well I too dont want to put the mockers on it, I mean beating last years total, not the Copenhagen Sumit 8) , but there are 23 days left this year so this will be a fascinating period.

Also with the cold outbreak still looking pretty solid and the blue moon at the End of December, interesting times ahead.

Looking good then Steve. :yahoo:

So did the bits of activity on the far side from a couple of days ago not make it in the end, I'm sure I saw some sort of solar flare of flux on one of the pictures from the Italian site. I'm by no means an expert though as to what is required to count as an official spot.

It is, I think this current streak has caught a lot of people by suprise. Many were thinking the sun was going to become more active ( but still at low levels).
