SFI = 77

A = 0

K = 0

With no sunspot activity, interesting to see the SFI increase. It does this as we ramp up into SC 24 :)

indeed but still in a minimum.

Well after the protracted period with what can only be called sunspecks not spots, the sun is blank again, activity will continue at very low levels.

looks like the sun has worn itself out lol.

maybe more prolonged spell of low activity again although flux is gone down since recent events still higher than 64 it was in the summer,

but solar wind has dropped again and flux down to 74 so intresting to see what happens no regions on the far side either,

it would seem recent activity has blown itself out so could be a intresting spell.http://nwstatic.co.uk/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blush.gif

It would seem that way, but activity can kick in at any time. Unfortunately even if a tiny spot appears they will be all over it like a bad rash, such is the nature of the way NASA observe the sun.

Morning Dave,

Solar activity remains at low levels.

7 day's blank, I think that makes it the longest run since Septembers spate of 8 day's then a spot sequence.

I would like that sequence to be broken over the coming day's

250 days in 2009, 16 more to move past 2008's run of 265 day's.

I started when it became minimum as well. Your location says London and you say you are reasonably placed and have witnessed several good shows, I am in Norfolk/Suffolk and was under the impression I would be incredibly lucky to see one !? Is there hope for me yet !

Lol i wouldnt exactly call London 'well placed' for auroras, i too became intersted about 2 years ago and tbh it doesn't matter where u live u wont have seen anything these past 2 years unless your in Sweeden or something.

But sure, occasionally they came down as far as paris, Norfolk is better place than London because theres practically no light pollution compared. There is hope yet!! [might be waiting another couple of years tho im afraid]

"16 more to move past 2008's run of 265 day's" iT'S gonna be a very close one!! maybe it will be exactly the same! 8)

Cheers Dave.

I really do believe solar minimums= colder climate.

The only thing that I am not sure about, is the time lag between when solar min starts & when the cooler or colder climate kicks in.

Yes OTGB, it would be bizarre if we ended up on 265 day's for 2009 aswell.

Not sure if minimums themselves impact on climate - there is one every 10-12 years which always has prolonged spotless periods. Failed maximums may have more impact if the maunder and dalton periods are anything to go by.

Even then there are many other variables at play - the dalton period had what was then a few exceptionally warm years (for our part of the world anyway)

The sun is one of the most intriguing areas of science at the moment with solar output at its lowest output in the space age to date and theories such and Livingstone and Penn making this deep minimum all the more interesting

Yes I suppose I should have said deep solar minimum. I do agree the suns current condition is certainly causing a few scientists to re-evaluate their theories.

and look at the solar flux 72 solar wind also perhapes the activity and stories of cycle 24 picking up steam where a little to soon very intresting if you ask me.

Hi Bb,

Looks like it. And to be honest even when there has been activity, apart from sunspot 1029, the rest have been very quiet.

I don't know if you are aware of this website http://daltonsminima.wordpress.com/ .You'll need google translate to read it as it is in Italian, but well worth a look.

9 days blank, 252 days in 2009 75%.

Activity will remain at very low levels

This next passage taken from http://spaceweather.com/

SOLAR MINIMUM: The sun is in the pits of a very deep solar minimum. Many researchers thought the sunspot cycle had hit bottom in 2008 when the sun was blank 73% of the time. Not so. 2009 is on the verge of going even lower. So far this year, the sun has been blank 75% of the time, and only a serious outbreak of sunspots over the next few weeks will prevent 2009 from becoming the quietest year in a century. Solar minimum continues.

That's good news Steve! I have to say I was a bit discouraged with the occurence of recent sunspots but looking at the overall picture, it's easy to see that the minimum continues.
