Not had one of these emails for what seems like an eternity:

A more active sun at last - hooray!

I think someone spilt their coffee over the equipment..

Nice to see the email alerts still working!

EDIT:... I found a second email in my junk folder.. So it was the coffee!!! :whistling:

"We are very sorry for today's false alert which was due to man-made disturbance at our Lancaster field site.

Regards,

the AuroraWatch team."

Yes - it looks like that's the only positive outcome lol. Perhaps the new year will see it used more frequently.... :D

Looks like activity is dying down.

Flux dropping to 80 & the spot should disappear of the limb over the weekend.

SOHO's Lasco camera 3 is showing a coronal mass ejection from that region of the Sun.

First spotless day recorded after that very active sunspot 1029 which tripled the amount of c class flares in that one week compared to the last 8-10 Months.

Is this a sign of things to come, or has Sol warn himself out?.

on spaceweather.com it says theres nothing on the oposite side.

so what is the black and little specks on the otherside?

and although spaceweather have suggested this is the start of things to come solarcycle24 have not suggested this i would not underestimate the sun right now it could continue to pick up which is what is sopose to happen but at the same time it could well stay low again for sometime.

one thing that is intresting is what will 25 be like perhapes a dalton?.

2nd blank day, 234 for 2009 77%.

The Sun looks fairly quiet, but could easily wake up again. Are we still in a very very quiet period, or are we truly on the way up.

I think the next few weeks will give us a clue which way.

"Don't be fooled by the sunspot maximum years - a good CME (coronal mass ejection) can happen any time. SOHO data usually gives a day or so adavanced warning before it interacts with the Earth's magnetosphere.

I'm reasonably place at my location and have witnessed several good shows. This one was in January and developed into an even better show later on but I'd already maxed the camera memory. Believe me, that red 'flame' was intense. I now have a better camera and a fast lens so I'm just waiting for the long dark winter nights."

Not any more- ive been hoping for auroras for 2 years and i haven't seen anything because solar min is extremely low as i got interested.

I started when it became minimum as well. Your location says London and you say you are reasonably placed and have witnessed several good shows, I am in Norfolk/Suffolk and was under the impression I would be incredibly lucky to see one !? Is there hope for me yet !

Solar flux has dropped to 71, and 3 day's blank.

235 day's 77% in 2009.

HI There,

At around 20:00 I saw a couple of greenish patches low in the NW sky that could of been Auroral activity. Its difficult because of the full Moon just now.I tried a couple of 15 second images of the area to see if the camera could bring any colour out.Veiwing with the camera screen only I think I can detect a reddish tinge in there but nothing conclusive.Posted Image

Regards Les

They're notoriously difficult to catch on camera, Les, because they're actually pretty faint and tend to move around a lot. Hopefully you'll have lots more opportunity to watch others over the next few years.

Very lucky to see Auroral skies, must be beautiful.

But I hope it becomes a very rare sight because of solar minimum.

4 Blank days, 236 for 2009 77%.

But solar flux has increased after a fall over the last few day's, maybe a sign of imminent activity?.

The likelihood of any acticity last night in the UK was zero. The Kp index was 0 or 1 (it needs to be 5 or 6 at least) and all other indicators showed very little activity indeed. Sure it wasn't the abattoir in Dalkeith Les?! :pardon:

Keep an eye on measurements of activity in this thread to inform your ventures out with camera:

HI Steve,

I only observe the Sun in white light but I must admit Ive not bothered looking for a while now(apart from occassionally glances with filtered binoculars),you can only tell yourself that a blank Sun is in itself interesting for so long!Posted Image

HI Shuggee,

I dident know there was a abattoir in Dalkeith, but being a vegetarian I dont take interest in such things .I thought I saw a similar more extensive glow the night before while walking the dogs the Moon just now is making dark sky observation very difficult. Thanks for confirming that I'm seeing things!Posted Image

Hi Les,

My reasons for wanting a blank sun are purely for reasons to do with a colder climate. I appreciate why you and others prefere an active sun, but not for me. The longer it stay's blank the better as far as i am concerned.

5 days blank, 237 day's in 2009. 77%

Possibly another two spots trying to form? http://www.spaceweather.com/. One region has the reverse polarity of a C24 region, would this be classed as C23? or is there a point into each cycle where it wouldn't be counted as a previous cycle region? Sorry if these are stupid questions, it's still a new subject for me.
