we had a pretty bad storm for about an hour here - no hail but thunder, lightning and torrential rain. EC going for 30oC by Sunday here - I almost spat my coffee out, we'll see lol

This is not quite as bad as the disastrous Chicago heatwave of 1995. On july 13th the temp reached 106F with a heat index of 126F but it's not far off. In 1995 by the 20th 700 people had died.

THE REGION THROUGH SATURDAY. VERY WARM AIR ASSOCIATED WITH THIS

SYSTEM WILL RESULT IN THE RECORD BREAKING HIGH TEMPERATURES AND

THE CONTINUED HEAT WAVE.

July (and usually all-time) record highs are typically around 43-45 C for most places in the Midwest U.S. and into the northern plains states and even the eastern prairies. For Alberta which is a bit higher, would imagine 38 C is about the hottest on record for Calgary and 36 C in some of the mountain valleys. Here on the coast we hit 35 C in July 2009 to set a new all-time record at YVR, into the lower Fraser valley it can reach 39 C and in the central interior valleys 42-44 C.

In the 1936 heat wave, a location in North Dakota hit 50 C (122 F) which I believe is the hottest temperature outside of the desert southwest region and even there you would have to go to Death Valley to find anything much higher than that (134 F at Death Valley way back in 1913). Phoenix rarely gets to 120 F, Las Vegas tops out around 115 F.

This current heat wave is getting up into top five territory now, and will soon be setting records for longevity if not for extreme highest (most of those come from 1936 but occasionally you get a station that has missing data in 1936 so they think they have set an all-timer that is probably bogus). It is just about 40 C all across Indiana, Illinois, Missouri and Kentucky right now, roads are buckling from the heat and tens of millions of people are probably in a heat-induced stupour, meanwhile, we are delighted to say that the sun is finally out on the wet coast and we're heading for 27 C (wowee).

trouble is its a tad too warm..yesterday we didn't quite reach 30c..29c where i was..the nights have been warm too so my house hasn't had a chance to cool down..so its still 28/29c inside at 6am then warms a bit more during the day say 32c inside even with all windows open as there has been no breeze.

Anyway we had a boom=boom storm yesterday evening very loud thunder..little rain though..cooler weekend is prospect.

Woke up to a t-storm at 7am today, its def cooler but not much. Nights have cooled here last few nights - we are lucky we have a big house where the sun goes behind after about 5pm so cools everything down. Still been some of the warmest nights I have known for a while though

We have friends coming out Tuesday and looks like after a wet and coller weekend that the weather picks back up again but to nice levels of 26oC - perfect for hikes and sightseeing

Several destructive landslides in east-central B.C. past few days, one on Thursday was particularly bad and swept away a few occupied homes with very little warning. The cause has been the combination of spring snow packs, recent change to hot weather melting snow, and heavy rains from thunderstorms.

Could see more of this as not all the alpine snow has melted yet.

The severe heat is returning to the central and eastern U.S. and southern Ontario after a slight respite (to 30 C) the past week.

Tragedy as two football players are struck dead by lightning while sheltering under a tree during storm

Two men were killed on Sunday after a tree they were sheltering under got struck by a bolt of lightning. The men, whose identities have not been released, were seeking cover from the rain during a soccer match in north Houston on Sunday. They had been playing in the men's league game on a field in Aldine, Texas when the storm began at around 12.10pm.

Posted Image

One of the players died immediately at the scene, whilst the second man was pronounced dead on arrival at Ben Taub hospital. A third man, who is being treated in hospital for severe burns, in in a stable condition, Harris County Sheriff's Office spokesman Deputy Thomas Gilliland told the Houston Chronicle. Police have yet to release the identities of the men who were members of the Cuatepec Guerrero soccer team based in the north of the Texan city. Harris County Sheriff Deputy Joe Shriver, who was at the field when the lightning struck, said he found the three men all lying motionless on the ground: 'It was nothing like I've ever seen'.

A spectator said the storm started suddenly: 'We were playing soccer, and all of a sudden...when I looked up, I saw lightning hit the ground, but I didn't know anybody was...there,' Jose Mayen told ABC news. The owner of the football ground where the men were struck by lightning has also spoken of her distress at the incident. Maria Castillo told local news site My San Antonio: 'This is a shock to everybody.' 13 people have now been killed by lightning strikes this year in the United States.

Posted Image

Although the chances of getting struck by lightning remains slim, a spokesman for the National Weather Service has warned that lightning in the summer months is more common. John Jensenius said: 'July typically has the most lightning and also a month when people spend a lot of time outdoors. 'That's potentially a deadly combination. 'Plan ahead, listen to the forecast, monitor weather conditions, and be ready to react if the sky starts to look threatening or you hear thunder.'

Freak summer storm hits New York

A severe storm hit the north-east United States, with NYC experiencing quarter-sized hail, strong winds and heavy rain

It has been a year of weather extremes. New York City finally got a taste on Wednesday when, after sweltering 100-degree temperatures earlier in the day, a dramatic storm broke directly over Manhattan. The National Weather Service warned of flooding in Brooklyn and Manhattan, and city authorities used a mobile phone emergency warning system for the first time to warn residents of the potential flash floods.

Of course, severe weather happens everywhere, and the wildfires in the western United States have been far more deadly than a bit of rain in New York. But we're east-coast liberal softies here, and we hold our hands up to localism. But you've got to admit that some of these pictures are quite remarkable, and worthy of sharing.

In this collection the first picture, which went viral almost instantly, was taken by former NFL player Dhani Jones from his plane as it took off from LaGuardia. (He was one of the lucky ones who managed to get out before a slew of cancellations.)

Dubai Floods: Another Warning Sign for Desert Regions?

The flooding in the Middle East desert city of Dubai earlier in the week followed record-breaking rainfall. It doesn't rain very often here like other desert areas, but like the deadly floods in Libya last year showed, these rain events are likely becoming more extreme due to global warming.
