My question the other day was a trick question -- there are no states in the lower 48 that have no straight-line boundaries. However, New Jersey is unique in having none that are north-south or east-west. Its border with New York runs at a diagonal.

Seems like LA caught it:

Posted Image

A powerful wind storm with gale-force gusts left much of the Los Angeles area strewn with toppled trees and downed power lines on Thursday, slowing traffic, damaging homes and knocking out electricity to over 350,000 customers. An hourlong power outage at Los Angeles International Airport forced nearly two dozen inbound commercial flights to divert to other airports, and flight delays lingered even after electricity was restored, LAX spokeswoman Nancy Castles said.

Posted Image

Damaging high winds also extended into other regions of the West, including Utah, where power was cut to an additional 55,000 residents, and 10 tractor-trailer trucks were tipped over by crosswind gusts north of Salt Lake City. Los Angeles County declared a state of emergency as a result of the winds, a move that hastens the ability of state and federal authorities to provide assistance, said Tony Bell, a spokesman for county Supervisor Mike Antonovich.

Posted Image

Classes were cancelled for thousands of public school students in the area, and utility crews worked to restore electricity and remove uprooted trees and fallen limbs that littered

neighborhoods, blocking streets in many places. Widespread power failures left traffic lights on the blink at many intersections. Homes and parked automobiles were clobbered by fallen trees, with 42 damaged houses and apartment units declared unsafe for habitation by early afternoon in hard-hit Pasadena, but no serious injuries have been reported. A service station in Pasadena was demolished by a large uprooted tree.

The advent of high winds put fire departments throughout the region on alert for a high risk of wildfires. Winds snapped off the top of a 100-foot-tall Christmas tree at an open-air shopping plaza in suburban Glendale, and another giant holiday tree in the nearby town of Monrovia was upended. Janelle Brown, 38, said the house she and her husband moved into a week ago in Los Angeles's Silver Lake neighborhood narrowly escaped a direct hit from a large 100-year-old pepper tree that was uprooted in their backyard overnight. "We woke up this morning, looked out the window, and realized it was gone," she told Reuters, adding she and her husband never heard it fall.

Posted Image

"We lay in bed until 1:30 in the morning listening to the cracks and the pops and the wind rattling the windows, and then finally fell asleep," she said. Brown, a novelist, said some branches from the tree came to rest on top of her house, and "there's a little bowing in the roof, but from what we can tell, we got lucky." Public schools in Pasadena and 11 other districts in San Gabriel Valley, northeast of Los Angeles, were closed for the day, though the Los Angeles Unified School District said it would remain open.

The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, the nation's largest public utility, reported nearly 130,000 customers were without electricity Thursday morning. Southern California Edison, which serves areas outside the city of Los Angeles, said outages that began Wednesday night had affected more than 225,000 homes and businesses.

The snow in New Mexico is great for most people but its dangerous for motorists. It’s been snowing non-stop for more than four hours on Sunday in Northern New Mexico. On Sunday, Interstate 25 and N.M. 518 on the way to Mora was snow packed. The New Mexico Department of Transportation, said drivers on in I-25 will face difficulty around Glorieta and will face poor visibility around Springer.

Driving is also tough from Taos Canyon to Cimarron and it could get worse as more than 5 inches of snow is expected to fall on the area Sunday. But for those not on the roads, the snow was a welcome sight. "It's beautiful. I love it. I can hardly wait. I hope we get more,†Charline Jiron said. Others are ready for the activities snow can bring. "I really love the snow,†Richard Valencia, “I Get a chance and be out in the snow...snowboard and stuff like that."

Despite the encouraged responses, NMDOT is out working 12 hour shifts to make sure people are safe in the weather. Pete Martinez, an NMDOT District 4 worker from Las Vegas was prepping his snow plow for a 12-hour shift ahead. "It's going to be rough especially if it starts blowing,†he said.

Thanks for posting...

At least in the USA there's a lot of large wide streets/roads so they have more of a chance of correcting their vehicle if it went of of control... and mostly flat as well.

Good luck to the people of New Mexico in the new week, looks like that low should give them a lot of snow.

We had a couple of mild wet days wed/thur and was stormy/windy overnight (not a patch on what they got in Scotland by the sounds of things!). Much more of a chill in the air today is below freezing with the windchill and in general looking like cooling down here over the next week with snow on the cards again, I await the next big storm maybe in time for christmas, the foot of snow from the other week is long gone.

very little snow on the ground here too - about 3-5cm's. Remaining fairly warm - temps today aroung 0oC. Not a bad fall/winter at all so far. I await the change in early Jan

On the coast, it has been unusually dry and sunny. Normally the first ten days of December would bring a lot of rain and cloud, but so far, just very small amounts of rain some of which fell today in a drizzle, might have been 5 mms tops, which can usually fall in a half hour around here. It has also been colder than average as a result of the clear nights but not excessively so.

I think this west coast ridge will probably swell up and then start to retrogress, that should open the floodgates to arctic air moving south and bring a snowy pattern to the coast, perhaps some snow in the Rockies too but possibly not a lot.

Eastern regions are also mild and dry (eastern time zone that is, not way east like Newfoundland).

Also unusually mild here in the great lakes, we had a few flurries during the week and a max temp below freezing today but its warming up again this week and still no significant snow around here- it's a bit like a British winter so far, lots of cloud and rain, just the cold wind reminds you, you're in Canada. I'm still hoping for some snow this side of new year, a winter storm would be nice but isn't looking likely at the winter.

A few ice days here at present, some flurries yesterday giving a dusting and a chance of 2-4cm later today/tonight from heavier flurries. Nothing major (though would shut back home in southern England down, lol). I'm keeping an eye out for Fri-Monday which is currently being forecast a bit more in the way of precipitation around 25mm over those 4 days on my weatherpro app and all as snow with the cold staying around though here can often turn to rain. If it happens good chance of it sticking around to give us a white christmas, was reading this earlier showing what places are statstically likely to see a white one:

Good link - I was surprised to see calgary is the 4th least likely to have a white christmas in Canada. I am hoping the 2-3cm we have on the ground is topped up or at least lasts til Christmas. Its a lot less than last year. However we are going into the usual mid december no snow zone. So might not see any until the new year now, we will see.

Further down there's a table of stats covering more places, they don't seem to quite tally with the graphic...eg Calgary is said to have a 56% chance in the table and 47% in the graphic, so not sure what they've done there. It looks like anywhere outside of Vancouver and Victoria sees at least a 1 in 2 chance of a white one.

Funny though in the UK the official meaning tends to be it's only a white christmas if snow falls on the day itself which was a bit odd last year as many places for the first time in a long time (first time I can remember lying snow on christmas for over 20+ years) had a few cm's or more of lying snow on christmas day but I don't think any fresh snow fell on the day.

it's looking unlikely Edmonton will see a white xmas this year..snow cover now very patchy indeed no snow or cold weather forecast up to xmas day..it has been a very mild December so far...maybe we will pay the price for it come Jan and Feb..anyway im flying back to the UK for 3 weeks on the 17th December..what chances a wet and windy chrimbo back home?

I would say likely to be green anyway. Looks like they're having a brief flirt with some snow and cold this week and the press have gone into their usual "Day after tomorrow" reporting style over a dusting of snow, Gloucester has seen a dusting but only on the usual higher ground places in the County, no real snow to report on there.

I was looking at the St Johns forecast for next week and it'slooking quite promising it will be a white chrimbo, after a brief mild and rainy interlude today it's back to colder and snowy from Sunday with 5-10cm forecast on 3 days from Sunday-Weds,maybe more beyond.Should at least stick around for chrimbo.

Lightning, thunder, hail in Orange County.

Unsettled weather pushed into Southern California Thursday, bringing light rain and hail as well as thunder and lightning to parts of Orange County.

And the National Weather Service issued a high-wind warning for Friday and Saturday.

The warning, covering the Santa Ana Mountains and foothills as well as San Bernardino and Riverside counties, lasts from 4 a.m. Friday to 1 p.m. Saturday.

Orange County’s windiest spots, Fremont and Modjeska canyons, could see gusts of 65 mph or more, the Weather Service says. Elsewhere the winds could reach 30 mph, perhaps gusts to 40 in Santa Ana and Anaheim, said Weather Service meteorologist Jamie Moker.

I'll give you 2:1 on that its wet and windy in the UK lol. Alberta as a whole has def had less snow and cold than this time last year. I just heard on the forecast that its meant to be 8oC at the weekend due to a chinook...that could be the last of our snow gone just in time for the big day lol. Oh well. Have a good trip - I'm jealous - I do like Christmas in the UK - its the family thing

So temps reached 12oC...very warm and very windy. All the snow had virtually melted in town. Then from about 8pm to 4am this morning it was moderate rain which finished off any snow we had. Woke up at 8am and it was snowing heavily and has been snowing all day. We have about 4 inches on the ground now and more snow than before the chinook came. Hope it stays for the big day
