weather is pretty grim here..came back from Vancouver last night to the third and worst ice storm in the last 3 weeks...roads and pavements coated in a thick glaze of ice ..i had to go out and buy a lot of de-icer and sand for my driveway and footpaths outside my house.

Can’t stand ice - had a few close calls due to ice storms. I feel your pain

The snow has just moved in. A weather warning has popped up too. Up to 25cm forecast in the region, though the highest amounts I think will be west of Canmore towards the BC border. I should have booked to stay at Storm Mountain Lodge. I think they’ll be in the sweet spot....

Complete whiteout at the moment. Very impressive - didn’t expect this. Webcam shows it off best at the mo.

Anyone picked up on the tornadoes that appear to have very badly affected Kentucky? Seems extraordinary to get this kind of weather in a continental location in midwinter. I always thought the US tornado season was spring and summer.

Guessing that an unusually extreme tropical airmass was involved - I have heard that even New York has (rarely) reached 27C in January, so guessing they were spawned by a contrast between unusually warm tropical air, and seasonably-normal cold polar air.

Yes it eased during early hours. Good total around 10-15cm’s around town depending on elevation. Kananaskis hit 30cm again.

The cold is back after the snow at the weekend. Lows in the minus teens/20’s for the foreseeable and highs in the minus double digits.

Forecasts next week for Christmas Eve/Day and beyond show a possible further cooling with daytime highs close to or in the minus 20’s.

That’ll make it one of the coldest Christmas days I can remember in 16 years.

Coincidentally this day 13 years ago I experienced my coldest air temp of -42oC, with the daytime high only getting to -36oC. That’s not including the wind chill into the minus 50’s. That wasn’t fun.

Here’s an article forecasting the cold to continue for southern Alberta to the new year.

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Keep those toques and parkas handy. It’s going to get cold and more than likely stay that way right through Christmas. Arctic air is forecast to flood across...

Yup don’t envy you. That’s a cold one. Think Canmore got to a balmy -6oC that Christmas day though New Year’s Eve was close to -20oC

I’m in Scotland between Christmas/New Year period (via Kent for Christmas) - I’m sure it’ll be mild and wet

Numerous record highs in the central and eastern US and southern Ontario, Quebec the past two days. Some are even monthly records, those mostly in Iowa and Wisconsin where temperatures reached the 22-24 C range on Wednesday. The warmth further east was a bit more subdued and was doing battle mostly with 1971 records, some places resisted by one or two degrees, others went down. In eastern regions the period 16th to 21st has lower record highs than on either side, there seems to be a bit of a spike around the 22nd to 26th with higher records returning. So today's records were fairly easy to break and some were broken by quite a margin.

This looks like the end of the warm spell, at least further north than the Gulf coast and southeast which may remain warm for a few more days, as the jet stream gradually drops further south and ends the mild spell from north to south. Some hints of snow before the end of the month in places still looking for their first snowfall event.

At Chicago the snow drought is now the third latest on record; the other two are in recent years also. No measurable snow has yet fallen in Chicago, Washington DC, Philadelphia or New York City.

Locally in south-central BC we have about a normal amount of snow on the ground (10-15 cms locally) and temperatures have been running slightly below normal for the past few days, but not a severe chill by any means, around -2 to -5 C much of the time.

It's chilly here this morning after yesterday's small scale ground blizzard. The path and drive were recording variously between 0cm and 20cm+ of snow, our path to the front door collects snow off the roof so drifts up nicely even when it's only a fly farting a mile away. Overall we've still not got much snow...next time maybe

Wind chill def making it feel colder. We used to get great drifts in our old place. Wind used to come in off the golf course....

Not as big a difference as you’d expect, when it’s already that cold and especially when it’s cloudy. Usually about 5oC difference

Looks like the western cold pattern is locking in for a month to six weeks. Similar to (Jan) 1950 and 1969. Expecting harsh blizzard conditions here in the southern interior of BC around 25th-26th. Good thing most people probably aren't thinking of travelling anyway for the other two reasons (health and roads just coming back into operation after the disruptions of Nov flooding).

Not too bad here at the moment, partly cloudy and -10 C.

I had been observing the NA/Canada pattern over recent weeks and got the impression that this December is a reversal of the usual plunging of cold air across the east and warmth over the west. I checked the LA forecast recently and to my surprise it looks (relatively) chilly and wet. I know Alaska also suffered with very cold weather during November and the autumn in general was an exceptionally wet one in the northwest Meanwhile recently its been balmy further east. I've seen quite a few viral tweets about how freaked out some Americans have been in that regions having to kill mosquitos in December. Kind of like a flip on the winter 2014/2015 pattern perhaps. American/Canadian weather interests me a lot so I try to learn more of its history.

What a stunning place to be in the snow Roger, hard not to be a smidge jealous of the cold winter BC is getting. My old city of Vancouver (was there for 2 years, still have a lot of friends living there) are looking nailed on for a white christmas with a very cold spell inbound just in time for the big day. Meanwhile, we've gone completely the other day towards an absolutely rubbish day weatherwise. Very very jealous

How long have you been in the kootenays? Absolutely superb place. BC and the Yukon certainly have my heart, although i can't for the life of me see how i could get a job in meteorology over in Canada, im starting a role in northern scotland next month.

Have had a long association with this part of the world through family then we retired here three years ago (from the Vancouver area), we have suffered from bad forest fire smoke three of the last four summers though. Only 2020 was really clear of it. We escaped the 2018 smoke by going south, the deserts had almost no smoke as the California fire plume went up over Idaho and Montana most of the time and the BC smoke went into Alberta. Then 2019 we were around all summer and got some moderate smoke, this past summer was really bad and we had the heat dome for a week with 42-44 C daily highs. So you might want to stay put.
