The GFS is forecasting snow from late Christmas Day evening through Boxing Day for a lot of southern Alberta. Widely up to 5cm’s possible from Banff across to Calgary. So a true white Christmas might still be on the cards.

Some deep lows also showing up in the later timeframe - whether they run the same storm track as the last one we just had, and if they are very potent, is yet to be determined.

I don't want to get greedy but Saturday definitely looks on for another 5cm of snow...just in time to clean up the snow on the ground.

Not as if we need more as there is now an issue with where to put all the snow:

20201223_170748.thumb.jpg.8fe7f15062ed82cb8901ca5e13d6a0b8.jpg20201223_171819.thumb.jpg.80f0b55fc95b3f92eb7e8f4ab60880af.jpg

No reason why another wee low won't spin across us at some point, the jet stream is sitting nicely at times to fire something up...

It’s ok to be greedy It’ll be a nice little top up but as you say there’s enough of it around. They had avalanche control on one of the mountains in Canmore (EEOR). Heard it and saw tail end. Caught a still from the BVN video....

Heres to the next storm as I have a feeling the winter forecast for above average snow is already coming to fruition. Many more storms though and we’ll be looking for more snow storage places. One year (I can’t remember the year) there was so much snow I’m sure it was getting trucked out of town.

I'm still getting my bearings so I may be wrong but I am sure I can see some of the mountains at Canmore from the house. There seemed to be loads of snow blowing over the top of them this morning but I thought it was drifting snow.

You might well be able too. From Calgary I think there’s a clear shot up the start of the bow valley. To the left it’ll be heart mountain first, then behind that pigeon then three sisters, which is in town. And to the right of the valley it’s Yamnuska,  goat then grotto mountain, which is in town.

There has certainly been a lot of snow whipping off the mountains. I have a vision that it’s all ended up in one place and someone’s house is looking like this lol...

Merry Christmas @CatchMyDrift and all

Apparently there was a rare sight in Canmore last night.....

Snow’s on its way...I can smell it in the air. ❄️❄️❄️

Merry Xmas everyone, I am looking forward to our wee 5cm top up tomorrow...and then some cold and sunny weather to follow ☃️⛄☃️

Merry Xmas to you too.  Fraid I'm on the naughty step again after some injudicious comments about dirty southerners.  Ah well.

Well it was a true white Christmas. It started snowing late last night and is still going now, albeit very lightly. Spot on with the forecast of 5cm. There’s more being forecast today ❄️

We've got the lightest of light snow here which looks on for the day so we should reach 5cm by midnight ❄

Not much more snow in Canmore but I’ve been watching the radar and it looked like a front stalled over Calgary. Although not heavy it looked like 24 hours plus of precip. Did you get much from it?

About 5cm, not been out to double check yet today. The flakes were those wee hexagonal plates you get when the air temp is fairly low.

Nice little top up. Talking of air temp getting low - Have you tried the boiling water trick yet when it gets cold?

And the terrible slushy dusting mess that we have to put up with in the city:

I couldn’t work out if some of these were from sulphur mountain, Johnstone canyon or none of the above lol. Nice pics all the same. ❄️

All of them were at Troll Falls near Kananaskis or on the way back from there.

I do like kananaskis - never been to troll falls though. Looks good!

A warm week forecast in southern Alberta. Temps up to 7oC.  It looks likely there’ll be some rain this week. I can’t remember many times we’ve had rain in January. A warm chinook yes, but rain - not so much.

Happy new year - here’s to a decent 2021!

Quite a rapid thaw underway. Temps around 6oC with the odd bit of rain in the air. Breezy too. Worse downtown, less thawing higher up naturally

And just like that - a fresh blanket of snow this morning. Icy in places. I think it’ll be a week of daytime thaws and nighttime freezes, with some snow or rain thrown in for good measure for the next few days. Then it looks like wall to wall sunshine for the rest of the week ☀️

back at work today...its been exceptionally dry here..recorded no days of snow falling in Dec..although did get a dusting overnight mid month..no snow in the forecast in the next 10 either..this looks like it could be the least snowiest winter since 2011-12 or maybe pay back will come in Feb and March?

I’m the opposite. It annoys me after 6 months of cold when it should be spring/summer and it snows. Mind you we’ve had 3 inches of snow in august. That’s just a p!ss take

So much for getting back to Scotland at some point in January...looks like you lot are stuck with me for a while. Meanwhile the charts are looking a little spring like to my uneducated eye? I am sure winter will be awful/amazing once it finally gets going.

Have you had enough of the snow and moving back already? Lol

It certainly does look like double figures are possible by next week, more so in Calgary. Maybe a few flurries before then.

There’s murmurings the SSW might shunt the polar vortex into lower Canada and beyond. Not sure it’d be this far west but if it is get ready for minus 30/40’s.

A true Canadian snowstorm is something truly amazing IMO. I’ll have to dig out video I took when we had a huge blizzard. Minus 30’s. Wind was around 40/50mph. The house was literally encased in snow and ice and you can’t see anything in the video - when I opened the door it was just blinding snow and the noise of the wind. You realise how people can die in minutes if caught out in that.
