Massive heatwave around the S/SW under a massive ridge.

Highest forecast max I can see is 50/51c at Needles CA on Sunday. Seriously hot.

Just came across this on Spaceweather, taken in Birmingham AL.

Crownflash.thumb.png.3671e2e69c3d70acb5538695916e60f2.png

Any ideas?  I'm thinking it's some type of Crown Flash phenomenon, aka ice crystals aligning with the magnetic field of the growing thunderstorm (at least that's the going theory for them anyway)

Absolutey insane.

For reference - 850 temps are around 35-36c over Death Valley at the moment! Almost the absolute limits on Earth.

There's a meteorologist from the Weather Channel that said it's more than likely Crown Flash (just without the reflected Sunlight causing the blinding glare)  The 'hoops' are the charged ice crystals aligned with the magnetic field, (similar to how you see hoops in iron filings sprinkled around a bar magnet.)

Also shows the unique local topography plays a part in aiding in super heating the air in the lowest levels. Death Valley is  6-7 degrees further north than places like Basra in Iraq, when incidentally the 850s a couple of weeks back were 38-40C. 50c+ then was experienced over an area greater than Texas.

Rather amazingly @ 117f/47C Death Valley is 6f ahead of where it was yesterday at the same time (10am local)

Yes it’s mad. Death Valley benefits from being so far below sea level, with all the heat trapped and recirculating back down from the mountains like a big convection over. It literally has nowhere to go.

This latest pressure chart from North America is truly amazing. Such a widespread flat pressure gradient with only a difference of 10mb covering most of USA and Canada. Widespread hot conditions for many until hurricane tries to move in from the SW to mix things up a bit.

not unusual to see this type of pressure pattern across the states at this time of year..in fact i would almost go as far to say esp across the western half of North America this is a pretty common summer pattern

Yes that was going around on social media a week or so back. Amazing how far out that can happen.

The flooding in the Middle East desert city of Dubai earlier in the week followed record-breaking rainfall.
