US to shiver in 'once-in-a-generation' polar vortex

Quote

The US will shiver this week in a once-in-a-generation deep freeze, forecasters warn. The most extreme arctic blasts, caused by a spinning pool of cold air known as the polar vortex, could bring temperatures as low as -53C (-64F).

Weather officials in the state of Iowa have warned people to "avoid taking deep breaths, and to minimise talking" if they go outside. At least 55 million people are forecast to experience below zero temperatures.

A state of emergency has been declared in the Midwestern states of Wisconsin, Michigan and Illinois as well as in the normally more clement southern states of Alabama and Mississippi.

Fantastic day here, route was Aztec to White Sands New Mexico, wasnt expecting any weather fun as the moisture from the Gulf seemed to be kicking off storms over Texas way.

Lenticular clouds above Alberquerque.

Arrived in Alamogordo in 90F temps and could see some convective rain drifting off the Mountains to the NW but it was going away feom us. White Sands is a beautiful area, surreal and almost silent. Some occasional lightning dropped where the rain curtains were heaviest as sunset approached. The clouds were moving NE but the lightning stayed in the same area and the clouds were back building.

Sunset over, the storm started to really get going, and as we drove back to Alamagordo, the lightning was moving closer, quick trip to Walmart, and back to Quality Inn, 5 minutes later the heavens opened. The storm was moving SE against the wind flow and crawlers, absolutely torrential rain and lightning were the order of the day for almost 2 hours. I will stitch some footage together a d post on youtube.

Well, our road trip avoiding most weather events *Weather events avoiding me....continues, the day after we left Oklahoma there were great thunderstorms, after Clarcksdale MS, same again...

Reached New Orleans with the lowest September humidity I have ever seen (only about 49% on Friday)...sat and sun saw storms out in the gulf but not heading ashore...and today sees the potential tropical depression sending storms in.....just as we head for thunderstorm less Florida!!

Nearest I'll probably get is this thing over Pensacola Bay...which is going the wrong way
