No Tornadoes Recorded Through First Half of March, a Rare Feat for The United States

The first half of March 2015 recorded zero tornadoes in the United States. The only time this has happened in the last 65 years was in March of 1969.

Only 17 times has the start of March seen less than 10 tornadoes between 1950 and 2013. The 63 year average is 27.66 tornadoes nationwide through the first 15 days of March.

Looks like a familiar story next weekend with the anomaly showing a ridge to the west, LP northern Canada with trough south down the eastern half. Bringing quite cold temps down as far as the Gulf and very warm air to the west.

Deadly Tornado Pummels Mobile Home Park in Oklahoma

Two Oklahoma suburbs took the brunt of damage from a rapid-fire severe weather outbreak that developed Wednesday afternoon. At least one person was killed and another critically injured when a tornado and/or accompanying downdraft winds moved across a manufactured home park in Sand Springs, just west of Tulsa. A number of mobile homes were reportedly destroyed in the high winds. Just south of Oklahoma City, the long-suffering town of Moore--struck by catastrophic F5/EF5 tornadoes in 1999 and 2013 and a deadly F3 in 2003--experienced yet another twister, though fortunately a much weaker one than its predecessors. Overall, the severe weather on Wednesday covered a swath from central Oklahoma to southeast Missouri, producing a preliminary count of 8 tornadoes and more than 110 reports of severe hail, some as large as baseballs.

Fairly quite in the states so far, you normally get quite a lot of tornadoes by this point, but it only appears we have had 1 of any note. A round of severe storms could hit throughout midweeks, through missi valley, Oklahoma, etc. Doesn't look particularly potent at this point however.

This is a time lapse video at the Columbia Metro Airport of Undulatus Asperatus Clouds moving over the airport. The WMO (World Meteorological Organization) has not yet confirmed whether the new cloud will be officially added, but it looked likely in 2013. A task team assigned to the case recommended it for inclusion. The next edition of the Atlas is slated for release sometime in 2015.

North of Drought-Plagued California, Snowpack in the Cascades is at Record Lows Too

The news out of California this past Wednesday was so grim that it once again grabbed headlines away from another region that is suffering too.

Following Wednesday’s news that snowpack in California’s Sierra Nevada range is virtually gone, today the U.S. Natural Resources Conservation Service announced that snowpack in the Cascades of Oregon and Washington is also at record lows.

Major Severe Weather Outbreak Possible This Week

The atmospheric ingredients are aligning for what could be intense severe weather this week, especially on Wednesday and Thursday. A powerful upper-level low is expected to bring the storminess to the Plains, Midwest, and South as it slowly makes its way eastward. The low is now pushing into California, where its power is being put to good use: providing much-needed snow in the Sierras and rain at lower elevations. From 4†to 8†of snow was observed above 3500 feet in the Sierra over the weekend, and winter storm warnings are in effect for 8-16†of higher-elevation snow late Monday into Tuesday, with local two-foot amounts possible on the highest peaks. The San Francisco Bay area could get anywhere from 0.5†to 2†of rain. While this won’t come close to breaking the severe multi-year drought across California, it’ll at least add a few drops to the bucket and give residents a psychological boost. The cold upper-level air may even lead to severe thunderstorms over central California on Tuesday, with a tornado or two possible.

Tornadoes Rip Through Northern Illinois, Killing 1 and Injuring 7

America's worst severe weather outbreak so far in 2015 was Thursday, when a preliminary total of sixteen tornadoes touched down in Illinois, Iowa, and Missouri. Many of the tornado reports came from a single long-lived supercell in northern Illinois, about 80 miles northwest of Chicago, that spawned a large wedge-shaped tornado around 7 pm local time. Significant damage was reported near the town of Rochelle, and every structure in the tiny town of Fairdale was reportedly damaged or destroyed. At least one person was killed in Fairdale, and seven were injured.
