Colorado River Drought Forces a Painful Reckoning for States

LAKE MEAD, Nev. — The sinuous Colorado River and its slew of man-made reservoirs from the Rockies to southern Arizona are being sapped by 14 years of drought nearly unrivaled in 1,250 years.

The once broad and blue river has in many places dwindled to a murky brown trickle. Reservoirs have shrunk to less than half their capacities, the canyon walls around them ringed with white mineral deposits where water once lapped. Seeking to stretch their allotments of the river, regional water agencies are recycling sewage effluent, offering rebates to tear up grass lawns and subsidizing less thirsty appliances from dishwashers to shower heads.

Cold but brief

The graphics below show the number of consecutive days during this month’s cold snap that temperatures stayed below freezing (midnight to midnight) in New York, Atlanta, and Chicago. In each case, the temperatures moderated far more quickly than was the case during some of the most intense cold waves of the last 40 years.

It was 8oC here and so warm - went to the gym in my shorts - however we did had a few trees down as we had a really bad wind storm last night. One was blocking the road the next road down and another tree fallen on someones car - ouch.

Currently in NYC, they have interesting upgrades here.  Gone from a forecast when I arrived (on Saturday evening) of basically dry... to snow flurries... to maybe one to three inches... now expecting an event which will impact travel - mid teens F, up to a foot of snow between today and midday tomorrow, tomorrow morning temps only a few degrees above 0 F.

Due to start within a few hours.  Supposed to fly back tomorrow evening, not sure that's gonna go to plan.

Tomorrow may be a temporary blip on the stats at maybe -1oC high and a few cm's of snow tonight but then another week of above freezing temperatures as high as 10oC. Loving this winter.

Especially if you look at my signature - last winter was a very different story

US east coast hit with heavy snow and bitter cold

The US east coast has been hit by the second major winter storm of the year, with up to 12in (30cm) of snow, blowing wind and bitter cold forecast. Even before the first flakes had fallen, US government offices in Washington DC and schools in several states were closed pre-emptively. As snow fell along major motorways along the US east coast authorities warned of hazardous road conditions. And more than 3,000 flights have already been cancelled in the US. Another 800 flights were pre-emptively cancelled for Wednesday and Amtrak began to cut back train services on Tuesday afternoon along its popular north-eastern route.

'Dangerously cold'

The storm comes two weeks after a weather pattern known as the polar vortex brought heavy snow and record low temperatures to the eastern half of the US. Perilous conditions stretched for 1,000 miles (1,600km) from Kentucky to Massachusetts on Tuesday, slowing traffic and sparking winter storm warnings. Washington DC is expected to see its heaviest snow fall in three years. The White House cancelled an afternoon press briefing and a meeting of President Barack Obama's commission on electoral administration. But the US Supreme Court remained open to hear arguments.

Temperatures across the eastern US are expected to be 10 to 25 degrees colder than average on Tuesday and Wednesday, according to the US National Weather Service. "Behind the storm there will be very cold temperatures," Chris Vaccaro, a spokesman for the weather service told the BBC, with temperatures around -18C (0F) in some areas. "It will be dangerously cold when you factor in the wind," he added. Wind chills are expected to make it feel as cold as -26C. Gridlock was reported on New York City highways, with commuters reporting drive times of quadruple their normal duration. "I just want to get to the Bronx," driver Peter Neuwens told the Associated Press news agency. "It's a big place. Why can't I get there?"

The weather has also affected New Jersey Governor Chris Christie's second inauguration. Organisers have cancelled the party scheduled for Tuesday night on Ellis Island in New York Harbor. Both chambers of Delaware's General Assembly cancelled sessions on Tuesday as the snowstorm approached and Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick postponed his annual State of the State address. Transportation officials in Pennsylvania reduced speeds on motorways and other major roads. A spokeswoman told the Associated Press news agency the state had already spent more than half of its $189m (£115m) winter weather budget.

The storm has already been blamed for one death on Tuesday after a car in Maryland slid into the path of a lorry. The driver was thrown from the vehicle.

i think this is the 3rd January in a row that has been remarkably mild....one thing however is the amount of thick and rutted ice on the roads...its like off roading..even though the temps have been well above freezing during the day the ice is so thick only the top surface get any real melting and you end up with a very rutted surface as it refreezes at night..plus the fact there is no snow to cover the ice as that has melted..so side roads are just terrible to negotiate.

Was out walking in the snowstorm yesterday evening in NYC, heavy blowing powder snow, crunchy under foot.  One problem; they are too damn efficient clearing it away in mid-Manhattan!  Looking out of the hotel window this morning it's as though we had maybe an inch or so instead of ten.  Coming home tonight and it would be nice if I could bring it with me...

Dubai Floods: Another Warning Sign for Desert Regions?

The flooding in the Middle East desert city of Dubai earlier in the week followed record-breaking rainfall. It doesn't rain very often here like other desert areas, but like the deadly floods in Libya last year showed, these rain events are likely becoming more extreme due to global warming.
