Happy Canadian Thanksgiving

As has been forecast for the last week the cold weather has arrived. A big temp difference over the province today with near freezing in the west and near 70oF in the east. Currently 7oC and dropping.

There’s rain in the air but the snow line is coming down the mountains. As the cold weather digs in this evening the rain should turn to snow and the first snows in town could arrive. Most places sub zero or close across the province.

A few cm’s of snow forecast for Canmore....more further west. And quite a bit into the BC border over the mountains. The ski hills should do well. A good start for the base. Calgary may get some snow but all the action is due west of the city.

Here’s a nice time-lapse video that shows how much snow fell last December in Canmore.

I never got a time lapse but there was less than 24 hours between these pics in Calgary off the same storm:

Hopefully any heavy snow stays away until I get back home in December...either that or my Dad's new knee appears early

That was an epic storm for sure. You guys certainly got slammed as well! I was wondering if you’d moved back. Fingers crossed he gets his op soon and you get ‘home’ before the first big snowstorm of the season ❄️❄️❄️

Cracking day today. The town’s webcam shows it’s off pretty well. Currently 14oC. Will probably hit 17/18oC. Very different to this time last year when it snowed every day for about 2 weeks.

The transition between seasons this year is dragging. Whilst I wait for a good snowstorm I’ve found a few pics and videos of past extreme events we’ve had in Canmore.

Pics are from ‘08 when we finished up with about 70cm’s in town. Up to 90cm’s higher up the mountains.

First video was of a quick cold snap after an Arctic outflow. If memory serves me it went from about +5oC to about minus 30oC and everything froze rapidly - including the creek  shown in the video.

Last video is of the ‘13 floods starting at the house the day before evacuating - ended up living on the floor of my office for days. Quite eventful.

True but it can’t be worse than some years. I think ‘08 it’s snowed every month of the year with 10cm’s in August. That was a depressing year. I’m happy with a snowy winter if the following summer is good.

im hoping for winter just like the one just gone..very dry ..in fact the only major snowstorm happened the first week in November 2020..did not see any snow at all until the end of Jan 2021 after that was just a couple of dustings before spring arrived.

I think the jet stream took all the storms south of edmonton through southern Alberta.

I was just about to post the same thing about sunshine village. As it rains in town the snow line is at around 6000ft asl. Dumping nicely on the ski hills though...

Weather warning for Canmore region. Up to 25cm’s possible through tonight and tomorrow into Friday. Currently sleety. My gut is telling me this’ll be a Kananaskis hit (more to the south and east with higher elevation)

As expected, a bit of a damp squid so far. Nothing but wet in town though some snow starting to settle on roofs etc.

Even in Kananaskis there’s only a little on the ground. Though the ski hill is doing well.

It was just too wet IMO for any real accumulation. Though the warning has now changed to say that it’ll turn over to proper snow by late morning down to low levels and it is forecast for all day today and night, so we’ll see what happens...

^damp squib that should have been - blinking autocorrect

Still no accumulating snow but it’s snowing quite heavily....the next hour or two will be the crucial time if it’s to start settling. It’s not normally this hard work almost into November lol

Forecast was pretty poor. The snow settled overnight but nothing like they were predicting. Kananaskis ended up with about 10cm. Calgary did get its first widespread lying snowfall of the season though. After all the rain/wet snow it made for some interesting driving.
