Worked out that the average high at nearby Warfield BC over the past eleven days ending 6th July was 38.6 C (normal around 29 C). We had five days in a row over 40 with 39.6 the previous day (those six days ended 1st of July, since then it has stayed almost as hot, 35 to 37 C each day). Our dry spell has reached 21 days with a few spits from overcast skies this morning, not sure if we're going to end the drought or not as radar not very active but if the cloud breaks a bit we might get some convection going. The average for a longer spell (19 days) was still impressive at 36.8 C. For today to continue this heat wave we'll need some sunshine by afternoon.

yep been much cooler in Edmonton last three days and only got to 17.6c yesterday ..warms back up to 28c today then into the low 30s for friday and sat before dropping back into the mid 20s..the all time temp record for Edmonton was not broken last week..June did end up being +1.3c above normal ..mainly due to the hot last week...here to has been very dry since last August..yesterday we had 15mm of rain making it the wettest day since August 20th, 2020

We ended up with about 5 mm of rain on Wednesday 7th from a number of very weak thundershowers and the persistent cloud kept the temperature in the low 20s, a bit of sun in the late afternoon allowed for a high near 25 C. So that technically ends the heat wave and dry spell but a few hot sunny days will return us to the very dry conditions that prevailed before this rather minor interruption. Our non a/c residence has gradually returned to more comfortable temperatures too.

this year has been pretty much storm free in my location which is unusual..probably a reflection of the dry stable conditions we have had most of the year..looks like this year the storm season will be a write off..esp as the peak period for storms will pass in the next 2 weeks..and end completely by the end of the 3rd week in August

The World Meteorological Organisation still states 56.7oC at Furnace Creek in 1913 as the hottest ever temp. So I think a little way off. I guess he could argue the phrase ‘reliably measured’

The 1913 reading in Death Valley has come under scrutiny as it appears to have been anomalously high compared to differentials with other stations that were noted in adjacent years (1910 to 1915). In other words for some reason the observer at Death Valley (the ranger employed by the NWS as it existed back then) may have inflated a series of highs at Death Valley in 1913. They are otherwise 10 degrees higher than would be expected from the pattern of other regional stations. A paper outlining these concerns can be viewed at a similar discussion now ongoing in the climate change section of the American Weather Forum (posted about two weeks ago by Don Sutherland). I read the paper and came away fairly convinced that the 1913 readings are probably bogus. The motivation if not instrument error may have been to publicize the location for winter season tourism. (the authors concluded that the real maximum for Death Valley is a more recent 127 F reading).

Here is a link to the paper about the 1913 Death Valley readings (it wasn't just one day being reviewed)

In 2012 the WMO (World Meteorological Organization) disallowed what had long been considered the hottest air temperature ever measured on Earth: a 58.0°C (136.4°F) reading measured at El Azizia, Libya on...

You could probably also find this paper by googling Death Valley 1913 heat wave questionable temperatures.

A similar reading of 136 F in Libya in 1922 has also been discounted.

Meanwhile, we are creeping back up into record territory after a few days of relatively moderate temperatures, currently 38 C and sunny here.

Smoking here:

The recorder may be stretching a bit as it's a bit hazy with smoke but nothing bad at all:

20210713_094126.thumb.jpg.a4f4412565a281a2ff365bc30b07b042.jpg20210713_094959.thumb.jpg.036d55cad18bedf38a48bee0b232ea3a.jpg

We're gently baking, nothing of any real heatwave note but it's consistently warm. July has averaged 26.1C so far against the long term July average of 22.8C, then the forecast looks like this:

After a one day break from the heat as noted, we have been consistently back into the mid to high 30s here for several days and there is a slight smoke haze from forest fires in the range of 50 to 300 kms away (mostly to the northwest of us). No fires very close to us despite some recent thunder and lightning episodes. Overnight lows are falling into the 15-18 C range but it only gets to that value for an hour or two before sunrise so the relief is somewhat muted.

If I thought this would happen every summer for the next five or ten years I might get a/c, this is the first summer since perhaps 2009 where the heat became a problem for sleeping. The smoke is nowhere near as bad as 2018 yet.

It's smoky and warm this morning:

Enough smoke that you can look at the sun no problem, it should clear in a couple of days assuming the fires in B.C. are brought under control, although it's unclear that they will be:

100 Mile House is about 300 miles west of here so not too far for the smoke to drift.

Indeed quite smokey today - I’d say for Canmore it’s fairly usual. Probably every other year, maybe every 3. Some years it’s been particularly bad. One year I was walking the relay for life and ash was actually falling out of the sky.

If you ever go to storm mountain lodge on the AB,BC border and onwards to Radium theres remnants of a large  forest fire that you can see from the highway and goes on for miles  (it burnt over 65 square miles of forest back in ‘03)

It stopped just 5km short of all the cabins there. They were very lucky. A change in wind direction saved them.

it got so bad here in Edmonton in Aug 2018 that the street lights stayed on all day for 3 days ..it was like having permanent dusk all through the day..2018 was a particularly bad year for fires in BC

Yup officially the worse year on record for BC fires. Over 500 fires and a total burnt area of over 600sq miles. That’s pretty much the size of Greater London.

I feel for those with breathing difficulties. I don’t have a problem but it affects me. I’d imagine there’s excess related deaths during a bad forest fire year but can’t find any official stats.

There’s been a couple of small forest fires within the Canmore area. This one at lac des arcs...which was held

Still smokey today (no doubt due to the ongoing BC fires)

It's still a bit smokey here but the smoke is a lot more acrid now, it smells more like tyres burning than wood (the smoke smelt quite sweet for a while, like candy floss or some other fairground food waft):

I think it’s the ponderosa pine trees burning in BC that have given that sweet smell in the air over the last week or so. They smell like vanilla so that would make sense.

Looking at the video it looks as though a lot of the housing estates over there are virtually new, so just like over here build on flood plains show people some new houses and the property developer walks far away from the development rubbing his hands with millions opting not to buy a place nearby as he knows what other people are ignorant too....

This side of the border can be quite different at times, the flood defences around my locality are pretty huge with massive storm ponds round every corner. Some are wet and some are dry and some pretend to be parks but also function as storm drains & ponds:

Having said that if you scroll back up the page you'll see Coopsy's post about flooding in Canmore in fairly recent years.

Indeed Calgary does have lots of measures in place that do a good job. That said it feels like there’s been more flooding in recent years. Whether that’s due to the weather getting worse or other factors like building/concreting things over I’m not so sure.

The flooding in 2013 that devastated Canmore and Calgary and many parts of Alberta was a 1:100 year event and no type of flood mitigation would have stopped that.

Cold today - barely into double figures. But it’s temporary. A quick warm up tomorrow and getting warmer all week - culminating in 32oC/90oF forecast by the weekend. The good thing about heat this time of year (and most of the year to be fair) is the cool nights. Down to single digits.

Hot and smokey in town - temps at 32oC.  Another fire just east of town at dead man’s flats. Some reports it’s out of control at present time and others saying otherwise. Copperstone resorts evacuated. Keeping a close eye on.

Another very smokey day but much cooler. Wildfire is now under control. 10 hectares burnt and now down to 6 hectares still alight. Apparently started on purpose which is being investigated. There’s some real idiots in this world. Rainfall warning in place with up to 70mm possible later today into tomorrow / so that’ll help with everything.

historically up to 75% of wildfires are started deliberately..ie arson ..the world has always been and always will be filled with knobs

^ Very true, sadly.

So yesterday was a choke fest. Terrible air quality. In fact it was off the very high charts....435!

After the 45mm of rain in 24hrs that we brought home from the UK it's back to brilliant blue skies and distant fresh snow on the Rockies:

So glad to be back in Canada, everything that seemed weird 9 months ago just seems like home now.

Welcome back. I do love that view of the Rockies from Calgary.

It was certainly a wet and cold end to the heatwave.

Scotland looked great from your pics. Hope you had a good time.

I know what you mean - it doesn’t take long to feel at home when it just feels right does it.

We’re entering arguably my fav time of year in September as things quieten down and (weather permitting) it’s lovely sunny days, trees turning, sometimes rather warm - then every few days the snow gets a little lower down the mountains and by Thanksgiving we might have our first snows, making it feel quite seasonal.

I do like a nice Fall pic (a few attached of some past years)

I was surprised when you said 9 months - that’s flown by.
