Well this tipsy turvy weather continues. Minus 17oC wind chill this morning. Now a wind warning for this evening with a strong chinook. Up to 110km/h in usual wind prone places. Temps maybe +7/8oC.

Some accumulating snows being forecast for Banff over the next few days through the weekend. Some flurries look likely to make it to Canmore once the temps drop again through the weekend.

Great pic - very atmospheric. You can see the cold air settled over the city

The GFS is showing a 24 hour snow event for Calgary region from midday Monday to midday Tuesday. Hourly rates look low so my guess would be 2-5cms on average. Maybe more in favoured spots. Maybe even some flurries for Edmonton.

Banff and Canmore look to have more snow chance from Sunday-Tuesday. Maybe up to 10cm in Banff, 5cm in Canmore.

Christmas at the moment is looking sunny and close to freezing during the day. That’ll be nice if there’s a fresh covering of snow.

Let's see how Canadian warnings ⚠️ shape up after years of the Met-O's warnings ⚠️

That’s quite an upgrade from yesterday! If it’s anything like the surprise this morning...I’d say a good chance of getting over the 30cm mark the ways it’s going. Especially if those up sloping kicks in.

Coming down quite nicely at the mo. This has a feel of a good ol traditional dumping. And I’m not even sure this is the main event ❄️

The forecast is still going for 30-50cm in the foothills/mountains, locally more. Less further east. It should start this afternoon and carry on well into Tuesday. I’d say heaviest overnight.

The snow has started to edge in on the radar in the far SW of the province over the last hour or so. This could get very interesting.

Obviously I've only been here for a few weeks so I don't really know but this seems to be at the higher end of what passes for normal? Add in the strong breeze expected tomorrow morning and it's gonna be a fun 24 hours.

I definitely feel as if something is keeping me in Canada for the time being. I was meant to fly back via Amsterdam tomorrow morning for 2 weeks over Xmas in Scotland. I had already cancelled before the full Tier 4 lockdown from Boxing Day in Scotland was announced. And then the flights were cancelled...and now a snowstorm.

You’re right it’s definitely higher than the usual snowfall amounts.  I think I can count on one hand the amount of storm warnings of up to 50 cms I’ve experienced. And all those have included upsloping snowfall warnings that I can remember.

We had a 50-80cm warning once and it delivered 67cm’s. Most times though it seems to top out at around 30cm though. This feels like it’ll be similar. (EDIT: caveat - some places will probably do really well and maybe get 50cm - covering my ass so I don’t get egg on my face lol)

It’s funny how fate works isn’t it. Sounds like the universe is working that way for you. I only ever came to Canada to take a year out in ‘05. Found Canmore, fell in love with the town, met a guy in a pub who gave me a job and the rest is history. Citizenship took forever but was well worth it.

Lol maybe you should get working on that. I like that I can come and go without the worry.

I think I remember that snowstorm as lots in my head office in Calgary didn’t get in. That year we also had snow all day Christmas Day.

I’ve only not made it to work once and that was the 67cm snowfall in 08. And I was within walking distance. They’re pretty good at snow clearance in this country.

^its certainly unusual - it’s all coming this way lol

Slight upgrades for Calgary. Up to 25cm in favoured spots, maybe more.

The radar has filled in more and intensified quite a bit in the last hour. In a few hours time, when it starts moving north, the fun should start.

Mountains are starting to disappear with flakes in the air...

About 20cms in the last 7 hours....impressive even for these parts.

The elderly lady across the road was out shovelling about every hour.  I do offer but she says she likes it ?‍♂️

A temporary lull in the snow and a quick sneak outside (neighbours will think I’m mad if anyone’s up). Here’s to another foot by the morning ❄️

Don’t think I’m gonna get much sleep tonight. Just looked out and it’s puking snow. About 4/5 inches in the last few hours. Easily a foot now.

What a cracking snowstorm. Getting on for close to 40cm around Canmore. Reports coming in across Alberta anywhere from 30cm up to 60cm. 55cm in kananaskis....

I think we've got about a foot, the balcony faces SW and the snow is coming over the top of the building:

And it's still snowing.

That’s a nice dumping. Few weeks in the country and already seen a foot plus snowstorm. You’re going to get spoilt lol

Well that was fun. 24 hours of snow. Quite an eventful snowstorm.  ❄️

It's hard to tell how much there is, maybe 30-40cm in most undisturbed spots. Enough that the air is rattling with snow blowers getting a good work out.

And it's still snowing...

What temp is it? Just looking at the icicles dripping off the truck makes me think quite low...

Great pics. It is a cracking morning. Managed to find Christmas in the snow last night.....(or I should say someone threw up Christmas in their yard lol)
