saw that on CTV. Quite a dumping. A buddy in SK said he had close to 40cm. Good old fashioned prairie storm.

backbreaking work shoveling all that snow..esp Sat as a lot fell as wet snow in the morning as the temps dropped it flipped into dry powder snow..so it was really heavy to shift..Sunday was better as much of the powder snow had blown into little drifts so was easier to clear.

I find November and April are the back breaking months for shovelling. As you say when the colder air comes in you can literally blow the powder off the drive. All good exercise I guess.

Not sure about you but I find 6 months of snow quite tedious at times, but when it’s early season, extreme or a good snowstorm it’s much more interesting.

67cms has been my 24 hour record - that’s was an interesting day in May

Metro Vancouver was under a snow fall warning of up to 10cm’s. It looks largely like there was only a few cm’s, other than some places with elevation and further north.

I read that it was the earliest settled snow for metro Vancouver since 1984. Not sure how true that is though.

Nig Sky looks to be open today the lift is running but there's not a lot of snow, I thought next weekend was the open weekend, but it seems as though they might have gone early, the snow water creation cannons are on in an effort to build upon the base layer..

After weeks of fairly standard weather there’s a wind warning today/tomorrow. Up to 130km/h (80mph) in favoured spots with a very strong chinook. This always brings warmer weather and temps have recently started to rise. Up to 7oC at the moment.

The flight over was awesome with a bit of a bumpy landing coming into Calgary. I have no idea where this was:

Congratulations on the move! Are you in the calgary region? Yup the good old chinooks are a god send in the winter. Hope you settle in well

I'm at Rocky Ridge so in Calgary but closer to Cochrane. I got my negative virus test earlier (less than 24hrs) so I've been out and about this afternoon at Glenbow Park:

Nice pics. I know the area - I pass that way when going from Cochrane to Calgary via the 1a. Great sunsets over the mountains from there.

Good news on the neg test - saves you two weeks of rcmp visits. Lucky Calgary airport is doing that pilot.

A nice run of weather is looking like setting up for a lot of Alberta. Possibly a week or more of sun and above freezing temps. Feeling warm in the sun and maybe double figures in favoured spots by the weekend.

@Coopsy I am definitely going to be lulled into a very false sense of security with this mild weather.

Fantastic pics. I have a feeling you’ll have a large file of sunset pics before the years out. Wait for the northern lights.

Yes I think you will be. I remember family coming over to visit for the first time during a chinook saying ‘oh I thought it’d be colder.’ Within a week it was minus 20. Lol.

Have you got any plans to go exploring the province?

It’s been an autumn of extremes from the record heat of October to record cold and now back to the heat. Don’t pack away the summer wardrobe just yet

Ah nice - just to the left of the engine bridge. Great view of Ha Ling and EEOR. (Ha Ling is a great hike)

Funnily enough that’s my prime fishing spot. Hope you like Canmore. Being a local I prefer it to Banff but thankfully all the tourists go to Banff . And you got the sunshine for your travels

Canmore was gorgeous, we didn't stay for long but I am sure we'll be back for another visit at some point. We're heading up Sulphur Mountain later this morning then back to Calgary. Canada is incredible.

I agree - It’s hard not to fall in love with Canada. Once it’s under your skin that’s it. Glad you liked Canmore. Enjoy sulphur and the views. And the hot springs if you go there. I hike sulphur a lot. Great in the summer too.

Quite chilly this morning but its looking possible we could hit double figures in Canmore everyday for the next week. Calgary ‘could’ well reach 15oC for 5 plus days straight. Quite a remarkable spell of warm weather.

As I usually say the weather will always even out, it’s just when. Cold Christmas anyone?

So a weather pattern change is looking likely this week. Will it evolve to what the long term forecast is predicting? That’s the million dollar question.

Having had a very warm start to December the forecast is for much colder weather to visit Alberta from mid December onwards.

The weather network have in fact forecast a bitterly cold and more snowy winter than usual across western Canada, through to the end of February and possibly beyond. They’re even predicting a ‘heightened risk for extended periods of severe cold and dangerous wind chills.’

This set up is similar to 2008 (another La Niña year). In that year i experienced my biggest snowstorm (67cm’s in 24 hours) and my coldest temp (-42oC)

It’ll be interesting to see if it sets up as the forecasters state. If so it’ll be a long cold winter. I’ve attached a few pics from their LTF. Southern Alberta could be prime for some cracking snowstorms and extreme cold.

@CatchMyDrift It may be a memorable first winter in Canada....

@cheeky_monkey I can just imagine you’re so pleased at this prospect. I know how much you love the cold

i did predict back in late Sep early Oct either a very cold winter or very mild and nothing in between...this was purely based on my experience of la Nina winters here...i was initially going for cold and snowy aka 2010-11..however in the last week things seemed to shaping up similar to 2011-12 that autumn had a cold snowy middle of November then turned warm at the end and on into Dec..that warm regime then held sway right through the winter..but looking at the charts it seems it will turn a lot colder again in the next day or so and in the run up to Xmas with some -30c temps starting to show up again...so the above charts could be close to the mark we will see.

NW Calgary is certainly my preferred area of the city. Though quite sprawling the transport links are good.

One thing a lot of people say when they visit is how dry the air is. In fact a lot people used to get nosebleeds in the first week they were here. Maybe that’s just my weird family.

Wet and rainy in Canmore today but quite mild. Still very dark though at 8am. very different to the last few days ...

Also I’ve got my eye on my next house in Canmore...Only $5.3million. If it comes with the northern lights it’s a bargain right...

i lived in Calgary from 2012-14..i was in SE Calgary in and area called new Brighton which is next to Mackenzie Towne (nicknamed English towne because its themed on the Canadian vision of an English town with terraced housing and a kind of high street with shops and a pub etc)..was never a fan of NW Calgary..you should check out Airdrie and compare it to the real one

Interesting you say about SE Calgary. I visited once and it was a unique experience so it put me off exploring further. That said I haven’t been to new Brighton. Sounds pretty good. I’ve also heard the fish creek region is quite nice which would make sense as it’s in that region.

I was looking at moving out of Canmore around 2010 and visited Airdrie along with Red Deer, High River. Basically a lot of places up and down highway 2. Along with checking out many parts of BC and even went to ontario to check out Toronto and surrounding areas (not sure why). But Collingwood is worth a visit.

Wheres your favourite place in Canada you’ve been to?

A much different feel to the weather today, Rocky Ridge really catches the breeze when it's coming from the W or NW:

I'm sorted for driving now so that will open everything up for me so I can get a much better feel for what's what. I am still at the novelty stage that everywhere holds interest as it's different. Also looking forward to some possible snow tonight

Hopefully the new car has got it’s winter tires on already as you might well need them come tomorrow.

Right now though that chinook wind is roaring through. Up to 100km/h in places.

But a system is coming through later. Looking like heaviest snow tomorrow morning.

Up to 25cm forecast for Banff to Lake Louise. Easily 5, maybe 10cms for the Calgary region - heaviest in the west. I’m forecasting 15cm for Canmore.

Unfortunately it’s very wet at the moment - it’s gonna be a bit slippery come the morning.

Heres TWN forecast...

Welcome back winter ❄️

Difficult one to answer..i honestly find Canada much of a muchness..i have lived in Edmonton and Calgary also spent 2 months in London Ontario and really all 3 places feel and look the same..i like Jasper but couldn't /wouldn't ever live there..spend time with work in Vancouver on a regular basis but is pretty meh..i almost ended up living in Windsor Ontario...really like Tecumseh and La Salle just on the edge of the city..but work wise its a dead town.
