Looks like they have been Hammered doesn’t help being in the Northern states of the us that border Canada did that snow come in from Manitoba , or from a storm out in the western USA .

That photo was from a few weeks ago and if I recall correctly the storm came from the North West. Since then it has been milder but they recently have had another big one in the Dakotas and Minnesota.

Looking good this morning in Jackson Hole Wyoming. Pity the guy whole left his 4x4 on the street as the snowplow was out around 3am, with the local constabulary writing out the paperwork

A double whammy seems set to hit the USA this week, one southside and another over the Canadian border set to meet as they reach the upper Midwest and head towards the East Coast thereafter.. (Courtesy of F5 weather)

Guidance is in good agreement that a couple branches of energy are going to meld together from the Great Lakes to the Northeast to produce a widespread heavy snowfall event from about Friday through Sunday from west to east.

The northern branch of energy will drift east-southeast out of Canada and meet a stronger piece of energy originating from the Desert Southwest to produce a confluence of energy for significant snows over a large area.

The 500mb winds chart, which shows the northern branch come down across the Upper Midwest providing the energy for snows on Friday, and the southern branch meeting up with it for the snows for the Mid Atlantic and Northeast this weekend.

Almost all the models are in good agreement on the magnitude of this system. Of course exact amounts and locations cannot be decided on yet, but you do get a feel that plowable amounts will be common from Minnesota, Wisconsin & Iowa to the east coast. The bigger snows will start on Friday across the Upper Midwest.

As the southern branch of energy approaches on Saturday, snows will increase in coverage across the Great Lakes as the system evolves to the east.

Finally on Sunday the system exits into the Atlantic, providing snow primarily to the far reaches of New England the way it looks now.

A combination of two lows from earlier in the week (as I posted), it's exit point wasn't clear, so good ol Newfoundland caught the lot....

Looking very warm again in that area. My daughter is in Northern Indiana and has a couple of days with a centimetre or two over the whole winter so far whereas last year was almost completely snow covered with an ice storm or two to boot. Nothing much changing in the next couple of weeks by the look of it.

View from my daughter's window this morning. She has just had her first really cold day of the Winter in Northern Indiana. -19C this morning. Back to above average forecast for tomorrow then coolish for a few days before unseasonal warmth returns the next week.
