Another spell of sleet/ice/snow for the deep south including Houston, only the second time on record that snow has fallen 3 times in a winter. Some remarkable temps around, down to -6C in the city of Houston overnight. New Orleans also having a hard freeze and snow.

Watches

3:41 PM MST Tuesday 06 February 2018
Winter storm watch in effect for:

  • City of Calgary

A long period of widespread snowfall, with total amounts of 25 to 35 cm is possible Wednesday evening into Friday.

Snow is expected to move into central Alberta Wednesday. The snow will move south into Calgary by Wednesday evening and continue southward through Wednesday night towards the American border. The heaviest snow will begin late overnight Wednesday into Thursday. However, there is still uncertainty where the heaviest amounts will fall. The snow is expected to end Friday.

A winter storm watch is an alert for the potential development of severe winter weather. Persons in or near these areas should be prepared for developing adverse weather conditions and should listen for updated watches and possible warnings.

Avoid travel if possible. Rapidly accumulating snow could make travel difficult over some locations. For information on emergency plans and kits go to http://www.getprepared.gc.ca/

Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada.

Warnings posted for a major inter storm for Chicago & Detroit over the next 24 hours with snowfall of up to 12” expected. Morning commute is likely to be bad and disruptions seem inevitable due to the longevity of the storm..

Incredible temperature graph from Oklahoma...0c to 38c from morning to afternoon.

Also note the very low dew points, some nasty fires in that part of the world at the moment.

Been following this for a few days now...

usa1.thumb.jpg.39b81d67dd1b49e4d617cf5775d9e5e7.jpg

Big heat plume heading north in the USA/Canada....850 temps are forecast to get up to 29c as far high as Edmonton in Canada! At 53 degrees north this is insane...by contrast London is 51 degrees. So it'd be like getting 850s of 29c somewhere in the north of England! This must be close to record breaking?

I don't know. Got a friend who lives near Edmonton and she often posts pictures of what look like scorching summers. Can and has been known to go well into 30C.

Oh for sure, with the huge hot USA landmass during the summer its much easier to achieve than the UK. Interesting that the record high there is listed as 37.2c - less than the 38.5c recorded in the UK, when 850s just nudged over 20c in August 2003. It's not as simple as just using 850 temps, but I'd have thought 850s that high would surely be pushing all time records?

i live in Edmonton summer temps are in fact similar to those of London without the humidity..usually it only gets above 30c 2-3 times a year...however last year we far exceeded that and have surpassed that already this summer also

Those huge 850s not quite making it, but still 23/24c, which is translating to mid thirties in a few spots in Canada. Very hot!

Also very hot across the SW at the moment - to be expected this time of the year of course, but temps approaching or exceeding 50c in the usual spots (Death Valley  Needles  etc  over the coming days. Accuweather have a heat warning out in the Death Valley region for up to 125f (51.6c) Thursday/Friday.
