Yes, some remarkable values for this early in the summer in the south west. Las Vegas can reach 110F or higher but usually more in July or August. We experienced 102c in September one year and the heat catches up with you given the very low humidity.

We were at Palm Springs over New Year when it is 21c by day and the locals were complaining about how cold it was - it's due to reach 49c today with a minimum of 31c tonight. Settling back to a more normal 43-45c by day for the rest of the week with a toasty night time minimum of 28c.It's currently 33c at 3.15am (probably hotter than it will reach in London all year).

West Virginia Floods: 23 Killed, Including Toddler, as Thousands Left Without Power

At least 23 people have been killed after powerful storms swamped West Virginia on Thursday night, forcing high water rescues across the state and leaving thousands of customers without power through Friday evening, officials said.

The threat of pop-up showers and overflowing rivers was still a concern Friday, and Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin said that search and rescue efforts remained a priority to help people trapped in flooded-out homes and cars. He said 200 National Guard members have been deployed in eight counties with about 300 more authorized to help with ongoing relief.

Baked Alaska: Heat records shattered across state

Heat records have been shattered this week in Alaska, typically the USA's coldest state.

Deadhorse, located near the coast of the Arctic Ocean, skyrocketed to a record 85 degrees Wednesday, the warmest temperature ever recorded in that area, the National Weather Service said.

It was also the state's highest temperature ever measured within 50 miles of the Arctic, climatologist Brian Brettschneider, who lives in Alaska, said.

Record Flooding in Southeast Louisiana May Get Worse

A devastating flood event was unfolding over southeast Louisiana on Friday, and conditions may get worse yet, as an extremely slow-moving center of low pressure is dumping colossal amounts of rain on the region. This sprawling, “stacked” low is carrying more water vapor than many tropical cyclones, and its slow motion is leading to persistent rains that could add up to all-time record totals in some places.

Multi-sensor analyses indicate that several areas in southeast Louisiana and southermost Mississippi racked up more than 6” of rain from 7:00 am CDT Thursday, August 11, to 7:00 am Friday (see Figure 1). More than 10” of rain was analyzed just northeast of Baton Rouge, the hardest-hit area thus far. In the 24 hours from 2:00 pm CDT Thursday to 2:00 pm Friday, Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport recorded a preliminary total of 8.49” of rain. Since records began in 1892, the city’s largest calendar day total is 11.99” (set on April 14, 1967), and the largest two-day calendar total is 14.03” (June 6-7, 2001). Given the very slow motion of the stacked low, these all-time records are conceivably within reach. A cooperative observer in Livingston, LA, reported 17.09” of rain from midnight to 3:00 pm CDT Friday. The state’s official 24-hour record is 22 inches, reported near Hackberry on August 28-29, 1962.

Massive Flooding Continues in Louisiana

Catastrophic flooding continues in south central Louisiana after days of often torrential rain. Water remains several feet above flood stage along many waterways, as an estimated 40,000 homes have been affected by the floods.

In a statement, the Red Cross said the ongoing flooding is “likely the worst natural disaster since Sandy in 2012.” The relief organization expects that the cost of its response efforts will exceed $30 million.

I find this time of year fascinating for the big contrasts that show up across the North American continent...



Very hot air (850s over 25c) still effecting Nevada/Arizona/New Mexico with temperatures still in the mid to high thirties.....while the winter cold starts to unfurl in Canada, with bitter 850s of -15c starting to show their hand and deliver the cold and snow.

When i lived in the southern canadian rockies I used to love watching the snow creep down the mountain further each from around early september to early November when the first snows of the season would settle on the ground.

I saw some settling snow in Canmore but it soon went. Nothing worse than frizzle especially when trying to drive in it and the windshield just freezes.

There is very nasty storms on its way to the Pacific North West coast of US. They could be looking at 10 inches to 18 inches of rain gonna fall over there.   They already reported 100 mph in some parts, especially on high ground. The stormy weather is actually the remnants of super-typhoon Songda.  The storms is going to get worst tomorrow as most of the Typhoon's energy gonna sweep in across the Pacific North West.
