I remember a trip we had to the States about 10 years ago. There was a short but big snowstorm and we flew into Detroit en route to NY. We were in Detroit airport for hours until the storm passed and it was miserable - no seats, sitting on the floor. I really feel for any travellers...

Being a weather enthusiast in this country can be exhausting. The outlook is dire for any snow here at all, and watching the streams just makes me so incredibly jealous.

I'm quite jealous two, but even in the states a fair few can miss out two, Northern most parts of new york will get very little, less than 5cm  while south new york get a good 25cm+..

A few live chasers over on TVN weather at the moment. The snow has just started to settle in Washington DC.

Getting going nicely now:

http://www.earthtv.com/en/camera-destination/washington-dc-usa/

From the Washington Post:

Key points:

This is a long-duration event, with snow forecast for 36 hours or so through Saturday night.

Conditions are the worst starting late this afternoon, continuing into Saturday.

Thunder snow is possible late tonight and Saturday. Extreme snowfall rates of two to three inches per hour are possible at the storm’s peak late Friday night and into Saturday.

Winds may gust to 40 mph on Saturday, causing whiteout conditions and some blowing and drifting snow. Stronger gusts to 50 mph are possible east of the District toward the bay.

Total snow accumulations 16-30 inches. Highest north and west of District, lowest southeast.

:yahoo::cold:

Can you imagine getting a SWW forecast like that for the UK!!

No neither can I :angry::D

I bet there are loads of people in the US who are dreading this event whilst most of us winter fans are gnashing our teeth and tearing out hair out with envy! Especially considering the absolutely dire forecasts being shown on the models at the moment. :angry:

I remember going to Washington in January 2010....towards the end of January.  Temps were up to 10C but I could still see the snow on the ground from an enormous dump they'd had a few days before i got there....which must have been almost to the day the 6th anniversary of what they are now expecting.

does anyone have a link to the weatherchannel?

Already a good couple of inches lay in that second video feed. There's too many cameras and feeds to keep an eye on.

Back from dc.... Flights were rammed as peeps got out before the storm.... Our virgin flight was heaving with people whod only been in dc a few days returning..... Airlines were letting peeps change their tickets for free, even us airlines! Would have loved to have stayed but wanted to get home....

will look at these tomorrow morning....http://app.ddot.dc.gov

even if they get 3 feet of snow, life will go on, they get the ploughs out

over here, just a couple cm's, and we can't cope. lol

i noticed even Mark Sudduth is out covering the storm, well why the heck not, no hurricanes to intercept

there could be some surge going on, in some of those coastal locations

Same old argument deserves the same old response.......if we had anywhere near the frequency of these events that they do, it would make it worthwhile investing in the infrastructure to make sure we cope better with it.

But the fact it only happens once in a blue with pink spots moon over here, means it is pointless doing so and a waste of money to both buy and keep maintaining that infrastructure......  which by the way would probably include forcing folk to have winter tyres on which would cost each motorist around £100-£200 a year (to change and store the other tyres), hile the damage the winter tyres would be doing to the roads in wet and mild conditions would be yet another additional expense.  <and breathe> :)
