We flew over the southern end of Lake Michigan coming back from San Fransisco to New York.

Those lakes are massive, inland seas really.

Interesting pattern change with the GEFS anomalies this evening. The NE ridging and the trough to the west on the 6-10 are both gone by the 11-15 giving a much more zonal flow and the end of above average temps in the east and also could lead to rising HP mid Atlantic

They are in the middle of a snowfall warning maybe up to 30cm's within next 12 hours

Winter storm warnings are in effect for Iowa, Illinois, Michigan, Detroit etc as anywhere from 2-12 inches of fresh snow will fall around the Lakes/Ohio Valley tonight and into the morning.

Historic Warmth across North America possible in December

 

There’s been a great deal of discussion with regards to this year’s El Nino event underway in the eastern Pacific. Looking at a map of ocean temperature anomalies at the surface, there’s no doubt that the 2015-2016 El Nino will go down in record books as one of the strongest El Nino’s observed. Just look at that long tongue of warmer than average sea-surface temperatures, from the coast of South America all the way to the Date Line along the equator.

Warm Northern US Winter Expected, Especially Early

 

According to WSI Chief Meteorologist Dr. Todd Crawford, “The unusually warm November so far across the northern Plains is likely a harbinger of things to come this winter as the historically-strong El Nino rages on and forces strong Aleutian low pressure and a northward displacement of the polar jet over western North America. Although there will clearly be colder spells, the general trend will be for warmer-than-normal temperatures across most of the northern US for at least the first half of winter. For the back half of winter, we continue to monitor the very strong stratospheric polar vortex for signs of weakening as we head towards the end of the year, as this is the best chance for a transition to colder weather later in the winter.â€

Well what started looking like only a sprinkling of snow in some of the western states has upgraded in the last day or so. Denver is expecting 3-6 inches of snow from late tonight through until Friday afternoon, whilst Salt Lake City and north into Wyoming are expecting to see a little more. Out of interest, it will be Denver's third snowfall in 3 weeks! Imagine if that continued every week...imagine if that was how things were back at home!

Well aren't the people Iowa rather lucky? After some parts got up to 18" of snow last week, they have another winter storm watch this evening as part of NW Iowa and the twin cities could get anywhere from 3-10" tommorrow from another storm moving northwards. It just seems like there is a storm to talk about in parts of the country a couple of times a week, even in such an El Nino state - it really is staggering how exciting the US climate is at all times - be it snow, storms the lot.
