Any news of Princetown, NJ? I have a friend who was travelling home from visiting his mother in Augusta yesterday. Hope he made it.

He said if it snows, you've got to get out there and clear the snow off your car before it freezes, otherwise it's going to get damaged when you're removing it from the drift. Lesson: buy a house with a garage.

When all the dust has settled on this winter, I wonder whether we will look back and think it was worse than this sinking south of the PV?

To my untrained eye (I don't really study world weather to any extent apart from a teleconnective POV as to what happens in the UK) but this 1985 event looked worse, if not in terms of actual temps but surely in relation to how far South and West the potent cold got and thus the places it affected that are not used to such cold.

The next batch is around T42 and then the next for the weekend that travels east from the Great Lakes before turning NE on hitting the coast. At the moment there is no model agreement and the actual track is critical and how far west will it be.

It’s a bad snow year in the NW; possibly record-setting bad

Snowfall in the mountains is at record low levels, and forecasts for the rest of the season don’t offer much hope. Some skiers and resort operators are trying to remain optimistic, while others are looking ahead to better times next year.

Another Blockbuster in the Cards for the Northeast

Headline: A blizzard is looking more and more likely in the Northeast this weekend as the models converge on a solution of historic proportions.

Yes, another big one is lining up for the Boston area this weekend, and while it may or may not rival the other monster storms in the past 30 days from an accumulation standpoint, from a meteorological perspective it may end up being the most impressive yet. Why? The upper level low, of course! The GFS (and to a slightly lesser degree, the ECM) is digging a monster trough at 500mb- heights fall below 500dm as the low pivots through NY and southern New England. The GFS bottoms the low out near 496dm Saturday night:

Coldest Day in Years On Tap for Ohio, New York

After focusing its wrath on New England for three weeks, winter is about to start expanding its reach. A packet of upper-level energy diving from the Canadian Arctic into the eastern U.S. this weekend will be accompanied by a strong surface high racing southward. The contrast in pressure between this high and the next powerful nor’easter off the New England coast will fuel an expansive area of howling northwest winds and dangerous cold. From northern Ohio across western New York, Sunday could be the coldest day recorded in at least 20 years and the coldest February day in many decades. This area is renowned for its snowy winters, but the same Great Lakes responsible for the snow also help buffer the region somewhat from the most extreme cold that’s found in the Upper Midwest and New England. Here are some NWS-predicted highs for Sunday, along with relevant records. Note that some cities could set daily highs for Sunday just after midnight on Saturday night, in which case the the numbers may end up less cold than shown here.

The eastern Pacific Ocean is now in cooling state that should last roughly a month or so; Shades of Winter 2013-2014.

HEADLINE: An upwelling oceanic Kelvin wave has surfaced in the eastern Pacific Ocean, sucking up cold sub-surface waters to the surface. The atmosphere is responding and often sets up in a state that generates exceptional cold down across the CONUS. The upcoming pattern looks very similar to the Winter of 2013-2014. Our official 1-15 day period HDD forecast (514 HDDs) is more in lines with the ECMWF 1-15 day HDD forecast (509 HDDs), but note that the GFS ensembles is varying between 530-550 HDDs. With a 2 sigma rise in our Winter Demandex during the 6-15 day period forecast, it would support upside risk to our current 1-15 day period forecast, which the biggest upside HDD risk stemming in the 6-10 day period

Here We Go Again: Another Blizzard Is Headed for New England

Hurricane-force winds, 2 feet of accumulation, whiteout conditions, thundersnow. For winter-weary New England, this is starting to feel routine.

Another blizzard looks likely to hit the Northeast this weekend, with Boston racking up around a foot of new snow along with very strong winds that could lead to some big snow drifts. Conditions are going to be absolutely brutal throughout most of coastal New England, especially in Maine where the storm’s full force is expected.
