Winter Storm Dion to Bring Snow, Ice From California to the Northeast

Winter Storm Dion, the fourth named winter storm of the 2013-14 season, will result in more snow and ice for some of the same areas impacted by Winter Storm Cleon.

Dion initially will produce snow in the West on Friday and Saturday.

From there, Dion will then spread snow and ice from the Plains to the mid-Mississippi Valley, Ohio Valley, Middle Atlantic and Northeast Sunday into Monday.

Here's a look at the forecast through the beginning of next week

More to come:

More of US expected to see snow, sleet, ice

MEMPHIS, TENN. — After cold rain and winds lashed the Southwest and other parts of the country Friday, millions of residents hunkered down for icy conditions expected to last through the weekend as the cold snap was forecast to continue causing problems and trekking northeast.

Face-stinging sleet, thick snow and blustery winds led to slick road conditions, school closures, power outages and event cancellations as the wintry blast dropped temperatures to freezing and below from Texas to Ohio to Tennessee on Friday.

In California, four people died of hypothermia in the San Francisco Bay Area while the region was gripped by freezing temperatures.

The weather created a strangely blank landscape out of normally sun-drenched North Texas: Mostly empty highways were covered in a sometimes impassable frost.

It forced the cancellation of Sunday's Dallas Marathon, which was expected to draw 25,000 runners, some of whom had trained for months. A quarter of a million customers in North Texas were left without power, and many businesses told employees to stay home to avoid the hazardous roads.

Meanwhile, around 7 inches of snow fell in northeast Arkansas and the Missouri boot heel, according to the National Weather Service in Memphis. Ice accumulated on trees and power lines in Memphis and the rest of West Tennessee after layers of sleet fell throughout the region Friday.

The storm dumped a foot of snow and more in some areas of Illinois, with police scrambling to respond to dozens of accidents and forced scores of schools to remain closed.

Also, Western and central Kentucky were under winter storm warnings slated to last through late Friday or early Saturday. With warmer temperatures expected in eastern Kentucky, forecasters issued a flood watch into Saturday morning. In northern Kentucky, Covington police closed the Ohio River Roebling Bridge in both directions Friday afternoon due to icy condition

Snow Storm Brings Misery To Much Of US

A snow storm pushes up the US East Coast, disrupting thousands of flights, as forecasters warn of more severe weather to come.

Flights have been grounded and thousands of homes remain without power after a powerful storm covered parts of the United States in snow and ice. The Arctic blast sent temperatures plunging across the country, with a record low of -42F (-41C) recorded in Jordan, Montana, on Saturday. At least 1,600 flights were cancelled on Monday - half of them at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport in Texas, where hundreds of passengers were left stranded over the weekend. An estimated 6,000 flights have been grounded in just three days as the storm moved east, battering the East Coast with unprecedented ferocity.

Up to 10 inches of snow fell in some places, blanketing NFL side Philadelphia Eagles' Lincoln Financial Field ground, where it fell so heavily that yard markers were completely obscured. It was a similar picture in Pittsburgh, where the snow intensified after kick-off. Eagles fan Dave Hamilton said: "Twenty-seven years I've been a season-ticket holder (and) I've never seen snow at the game like this. It just kept coming down." Some of the most difficult conditions were in northern Texas, where more than 22,000 homes and businesses were still without power on Monday.

At one stage on Friday, more than a quarter of a million properties were without electricity. Power outages have also been reported in West Virginia, Maryland and in Washington, DC. Meanwhile, drivers endured treacherous conditions on roads across several states. In Oklahoma, a five-year-old boy died when the van he was travelling in slid off an icy bridge, while a man was killed in a 50-vehicle crash in the Philadelphia area.

A crash near New York City involved about 20 vehicles, although no one was injured. The National Weather Service has warned of more severe weather to come, with a second storm expected to dump up to a further five inches of snow on the mid-Atlantic region. Meteorologist Bruce Sullivan said: "I don't think things are going to warm up anytime soon."

Great - I've gotta travel to Calgary tomorrow for meetings in downtown. Nice and clear here, we havent really had much snow in about 3-4 weeks now as the big storm missed us last week. If it warms up to any degree we could see a brown christmas at this rate....first one since 2005.

'It was like a big crash at Nascar': Amazing video shows huge pile-up on snow-covered Wisconsin highway involving 40 cars
  • Crashes occurred on Highway 41/45 near Germantown
  • Twelve people were injured but there were no fatalities
  • Police: The cars just kept 'going and going and going'
Incredible footage of a mass pile-up, involving around 40 cars on a snow-covered highway, has been released - and miraculously, no one died. The crashes occurred on Highway 41/45 near Germantown, Wisconsin on Sunday and continued for around five minutes. Several cars skidded off the road onto a grass verge, while many others crashed as they sped towards the carnage, unable to stop fast enough in the wintry conditions.

Twelve people were injured, according to Germantown police, who said they were amazed by the number of motorists who remained standing on the road. Officer Tim Miller, who was en route to another crash, said: 'If people watch Nascar, and they watch the Daytona 500 or Talledega, where they wait for what’s called the Big Crash, where all the cars crash because they’re all so close together, that’s what this was like - only there was nobody there to stop it with a yellow flag and slow all the other cars down.

we have masses of snow in Calgary..has been very snowy the last 2-3weeks..thank fully has stopped today..we are going to miss the next winter storm which is heading towards Edmonton..they are forecast to get between 25-50cm of snow in the next 2-3 days..whilst here we are to the south of that storm so we will benefit from a big warm up as the storm passes to the north of here..back up to 0c or even +1c today...may even grab a +6c on SaturdayPosted Image

Is the West’s Dry Spell Really a Megadrought?

SAN FRANCISCO — The drought that has been afflicting most of the Western states for the past 13 years may be a “megadrought,†and the likelihood is high that this century could see a multi-decade dry spell like nothing else seen over the past 1,000 years, according to research presented at the American Geophysical Union Fall Meeting on Wednesday and Thursday.

Today, drought or abnormally dry conditions are affecting every state west of the Mississippi River and many on the East Coast, with much of the Southwest under long-term severe, extreme or exceptional drought conditions. While drought conditions nationwide are down this year, they remain entrenched in the West.

It hit 7oC yesterday and we had a very strong chinook. Winds I would estimate at times gusting 40/50mph.

Anyway last night the snow dumped in a few hours and we ended up with 2-3 new inches of snow and 14cm's at Sunshine.

Nice surprise.

CM - I saw heavy purples on the radar in a thin band of snow and a flash warning for calgary for over 10 cm's in a few hours for select areas. Did you get it?
