Summer continues unabated here in Alberta...September definitely seems to be much more of a summer month than June or even sometimes July since i have been here...27c today..and could get passed 30c on Thurs and Fri and staying in the high 20s right through the weekend with unbroken sunshine.

Yes CH..

My 3rd Sept & always had the best weather then..Infact the warmest day has been in Sept the last 3 years..

It will change quick though..!!!!

We hit 100oF here July 2 and had over 30oC for about 5 fays in early July.

We got to 27oC yesterday.

That said today could hit 30oC but then we always have at least a week of hot sunny weather in September maybe more

Am I right in thinking the northeast US and Canada are looking at a significant cool down?

Probably reverting to more seasonal temperatures across the northeast...where as the rest of N.America summer continues with temps staying well into 30s..even here we could hit 30c again over the weekend  like we did yesterday and another couple of times is possible by the time we get into next week.

Average high at this time of year are around 16/17c..with average lows around 2/3c...first air frost occurs around the 10th September but we haven't really got below 10c..no frost is forecast in the next 10 days either.

We've had a couple of light frosts through out the summer here this year as one night it got down to 0oC.

Was out in the pub garden last night and although scorching in the sun you certainly notice it when the sun goes down behind the mountains.

Been a cracking week weather wise and looking set to continue to about Tuesday/Wednesday.

Have not seen any geese flying south for the winter yet..which is kind of late...last time they were this late was 2011 and was followed by a very mild winter...in 2010 they left mid September and was followed by a cold snowy winter.

South Dakota snowfall.. unbelievable. These places are usually quite dry in the winter so don't often get such mammoth snowfall totals.

Winter Storm Atlas Brings Snow, Tornadoes to South Dakota, Wyoming

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — A storm system that buried parts of Wyoming and South Dakota in heavy, wet snow on Friday also brought powerful thunderstorms and possible tornadoes to the Great Plains.

The storm dumped at least 33 inches of snow in a part of South Dakota's scenic Black Hills, National Weather Service meteorologist Eric Helgeson said Friday afternoon. Later in the day, thunderstorms rolled across the Plains, and witnesses reported seeing tornadoes in Nebraska, Iowa and South Dakota. There were no reports of deaths from any of the tornadoes. Some of the greatest damage from tornadoes seemed to be in Wayne, Neb., where witnesses reported seeing a 2-mile-wide twister that destroyed at least four homes and damaged several businesses. Mayor Ken Chamberlain said all of the residents in town were accounted for. At least 15 people were hurt, but none of the injuries was considered life-threatening, Chamberlain said.

The Iowa Department of Homeland Security said a mile-wide tornado touched down near the town of Cherokee, cutting a 2- to 3-mile path through farmland but missing any population centers.Officials said they were still trying to figure out exactly how many twisters touched down Friday evening. Witnesses also reported seeing them near Jefferson, S.D., and Sloan, Iowa, among other places. Much of the damage seemed to be in rural areas. The storms also brought hail and rain.

Earlier in the day, snow was blamed for the deaths of three people who were killed in a traffic accident on snow-slicked U.S. 20 in northeast Nebraska.Forecasters said the cold front would eventually combine with other storms to make for a wild, and probably very wet, weekend for much of the central U.S. and Southeast. Julie Lee said she and fellow members of her White Rose Band were accustomed to snow, just "not for the fourth of October." They had barely unloaded their instruments in South Dakota's Old West casino town of Deadwood before the wet, heavy snow started falling and closed part of Interstate 90, the area's only interstate.

"Our car is like an igloo," said Lee, who sings and plays the clarinet and saxophone for her North Dakota-based polka band. "I'm glad we got everything out."

The snow prompted Deadwood officials to postpone their annual Octoberfest, including Friday night's dancing-and-singing pub crawl and Saturday's Wiener Dog Races and Beer Barrel Games. But Lee said she and her accordion-playing husband, who had planned to set up in a casino bar, would entertain stranded guests because "you can only gamble for so long." Officials were warning drivers to stay off the roads in the Black Hills and in eastern Wyoming, where reports of 5 to 10 inches of snow were common. Forecasters urged travelers to carry survival kits and to stay in their vehicles if stranded. "I've lived in Wyoming my whole life and I've never seen it like this this early," Patricia Whitman, shift manager at the Flying J truck stop in Gillette, said in a telephone interview. She said her truck stop's parking lot was full of travelers waiting out the storm. "I know several of the businesses nearby are completely closed because they can't even get workers into work - it's pretty nasty," she said.

The snow also snapped tree limbs that knocked out power lines in parts of the state, causing thousands of people to lose power. By Friday night, South Dakota officials had closed I-90 from the Wyoming border to Murdo. And no travel was advised in Rapid City, where first responders were overwhelmed with calls for stuck vehicles and downed trees and power lines making some roads impassable. Police spokeswoman Tarah Heupel said snow and ice was accumulating on traffic signals, making the lights difficult to see. Although early October snowfalls aren't unusual for the region, a storm of such magnitude happens only once every decade or two on the Plains, National Weather Service meteorologist Steve Trimarchi said.

"I couldn't say when the last time we've had one like this. It's been quite a while," Trimarchi said. The cold front is moving slowly east and expanding south and will meet up with the remnants of Tropical Storm Karen on Saturday or Sunday, after that storm makes landfall along the Gulf Coast.
Though much of the Midwest and Southeast may get soaked, it won't be as devastating as past combination storms, such as Superstorm Sandy, said William Bunting, operations chief at the Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Okla. Sandy resulted from the merging of cold fronts and a tropical storm.

The Midwest, especially Kansas, Nebraska and Iowa, are at most risk for large thunderstorms, tornadoes and hail, "perhaps baseball-sized hail," Bunting said. On Thursday night, a tornado that touched down damaged homes and businesses in several communities, knocked out power and toppled trees. No injuries were reported. The storm system also blanketed Colorado's northern mountains with snow.

I saw that there were some severe storms throughout the Midwest in the boundary between the much cooler air out to the northwest and the warmer air to the south east. Here is some fantastic footage of one of the storms taken from a passenger jet. http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=ba7_1381006224

Blizzard Catastrophe Kills Tens of Thousands of Cows; Shutdown Leaves Ranchers on Ice

Last Wednesday, the weather was sunny and warm at Bob Fortune's cattle ranch in Belvidere, S.D. On Thursday, it started raining. By Friday night, the rain had turned to snow. By the weekend, the snow turned to a blizzard with 60 mile an hour winds. By the weekend, Fortune says, "the cattle just couldn't stand the cold anymore, and they just started dying."

Not much coverage in the news about this early autumn blizzard that's killed over 100,000 cattle?

But it's been a little hot in Australia, so they say.

Probably because it was a flash in the pan so to speak...generally October has been mild/warm over the vast majority of the USA and Canada..there are no signs of any cold weather even in my neck of the woods in the next 2 weeks..this time last year winter had already started here and Oct 2012 turned out to be very cold and snowy..this year is lovely warm sunny days and cool nights just how Autumn should be.

This will be my 9th winter and in the past 4 years a coldish snowy October has led to a winter above average , whilst a snowless warm October has generally led to a colder winter.

My forecast (based on no scientific reason) will be gradual cooling of temps with our first storm around the first week of November (maybe Hallowe'en weekend) followed by a colder than normal winter and less snow than the past few years.

Precip for her though is usually hit and miss here in the mountains but as long as we get those chinooks coming through regularly I'll be happy.
