Again the forecast was totally wrong for the last 4 days - no rain - vey warm and sunny intervals. Was playing golf Thursday for 5 hours and got sunburnt. Last night sat on the deck in 21oC and today looking round the car show outside and lovely and sunny and warm.

yep virtually all of May and June has been wet..worse than normal i wager..we had a warm few days right at the start of May since then it has been cool and very wet with lots more to come...means it will be a nasty mosquito season with all this standing water..and they are already out in force!

I see the heat has bypassed you guys and jumped to Alaska

A searing dome of heat has laid itself out over interior Alaska, pushing temperatures to all-time records in several locations.

The core of heat was lodged over south central Alaska where the mercury spiked into the mid-90s Monday, nearly 30 degrees above average and warmer than anywhere east of the Mississippi in the contiguous U.S.

Some more info on just how odd this event is. at the other side of the U.S., just over the border into Mexico, we have Barry wading ashore a full 6 weeks ahead of when the 'normal' second named storm happens?

Are we becoming accustomed to all the 'oddness'? is 'Odd' the new average?

Currently I am in south central BC to attend a funeral of an elderly relative. The weather here has been very wet for three days and some local highways have been briefly washed out (rocks or trees block culverts or small bridges on mountain streams, then the swollen river has nowhere to go but across the highway). This is quite normal around here in June (most years) as the early summer sees a lot of closed lows near US-Canada border, easterly flow across AB and BC. What's a bit different this year is that the set-up stalled for three or four days and drew in Gulf moisture as well as Pacific moisture. Hence, severe to near catastrophic flooding in parts of southern Alberta. Canmore where Rich is located has been hard hit, also parts of Calgary and High River, Lethbridge and various other smaller towns. Anyway, we'll hope that the worst is behind us now although the system will require two or three more days to dissipate. But today (Thursday) has been a lot less rainy than the previous three days here and I can even see a slight brightening of the sky now.

Could be the worst flooding on record,,,most of Calgary is now shut down..downtown is cut off by flood waters..areas outside the city esp into the foothills to the south of the city have literally been washed away whole towns evacuated and underwater..still more rain to come and rivers will continue to rise for the next 24-36 hrs...looks like the deerfoot which is the main highway north south through Calgary will be shut soon as the flood water has already closed numerous slip roads on and off and is closing in on the motorway rapidly.

Yes, I see on the current radar that it continues to pour heavy rain west of Calgary and across Canmore towards Banff. Where I am located we are getting the far end of this same tongue of heavy rain but it's more of a moderate downpour here. Even so, some local highways have had washouts, but towns in these B.C. valleys are generally built above much higher flood lines due to our deeper creek valleys. The local creek here has doubled in width and probably quadrupled in flow since last weekend when it was already in normal June flood stage, and it's bringing down considerable debris including entire trees swept into the creek higher up its ten-mile rampage from snowmelt to lake at 450m asl. This lake is quite deep and 40 km long so while it does rise a metre or so at high flood stage, nothing is built closer to that level than maybe 7 metres higher up, thus no real hazard except to boaters unaware of the dangers posed by floating trees (they are not all floating above the surface). A sparkling 13 C night and day with this downpour and little sign of it easing before Sunday. Around Calgary the heavy rain is edging west very slowly away from the foothills but as the rivers rise in the heavy rain zone this means little in terms of avoiding as mentioned above catastrophic local flooding. The city spreads out over many hilly areas too so readers should be aware, the whole city is not at risk, but Canmore on the other hand is in relatively flat country at the confluence of two large rivers and several creeks, all of which are in historic flood stages, so the outlook there is dire.

Holy sh!t is all I can say about the last 5 days.8 inches of rain in 36-48 hours. Cougar creek wiping out homes and highways. Eagle terrace being cut off as the road has gone. We were 3 inches away from having our home ruined in south canmore. Not from a river breach but rising ground water. We had to evacuate Friday night and spend the night in my office.Thankfully army was helping an at the last hour dug a trench to the creek to relieve the road.On top of this my mum flew in from England Thursday and was stuck there until yesterday when I managed to sneak through and get her and get back.If ever the river breaches here Canmore is gone. Time to move on maybe

Here is a pic of our back yard taken from the upstairs window. This is when the water was at the doors. Thankfully it finally receeded.

Actually the Death Valley  reading of 134F is not considered to be safe. Chris Burt's article on this:

http://www.wunderground.com/blog/weatherhistorian/comment.html?entrynum=3

Conclusion: the safest maximum so far is the 129F (53.9C) recorded in Death valley on 4 occasions.

Perhaps this weekend may top this?

exactly looking further ahead into the middle of next week...we could see some record breaking heat in our area...temps will be widely 33-35c..wouldn't be surprised to see some areas close to the American border get close to 38c (100f)

Southwest Scorched by Historic Heat

It was historically hot in the desert Southwest today. Over a dozen major National Weather Service climate locations in Arizona, Nevada and interior California tied or broke temperature records for June 28, in some cases by big margins. The highest readings in absolute terms were 118° at Palm Springs, California, which tied its 1979 record, and at Yuma, Arizona. Yuma climate records began nearly 140 years ago, in 1876. The previous record of 116° was tied 3 times, but it was soundly broken by a margin of 2°. At Winnemucca, Nevada the previous record of 101° was set just 3 years ago in a climate history which dates back to 1877, but this was surpassed by an impressive margin of 4°.

Looking at the BBC weather website - 55C expected in Death Valley later. Ridiculous!

I’ve been following theWeatherSpace.com Senior Meteorologist Kevin Martin’s trip to Death Valley ….

Top - My reading from Badwater Basin, at 282 feet below sea level ... Peak heating shows what could be a record reading.

Middle - 132 at Furnace Creek, about 17 miles north at 190 feet below sea level.

Being Badwater basin is lower in elevation, had an east downslope wind from the southeast ... it's conceivable that the area is hotter by 2-3 degrees than at Furnace Creek.

Bottom - Me standing next to the Furnace Creek Thermometer at around 1:00pm, just a couple hrs before peak heating.

Serious weather event....the Yarnell fire is the worst lost of US firefighters in a wildfire in 80 years, and it is still young in lifespan and size. It is 0 percent contained as of 11pm Arizona time....

Gusty hot winds blew an Arizona blaze out of control Sunday in a forest northwest of Phoenix, overtaking and killing 19 members of an elite fire crew in the deadliest wildfire involving firefighters in the U.S. for at least 30 years.....

Wildfire that killed 19 firefighters destroyed estimated 200 homes in central Ariz. community

YARNELL, Ariz. — A wildfire that killed 19 firefighters in Arizona also destroyed an estimated 200 homes in a central Arizona community. Dry grass near the communities of Yarnell and Glen Isla fed the fast-moving blaze, which was whipped up by wind and raced through the homes.  Most people had evacuated from the town of 700, and no injuries or other deaths were reported. The Red Cross has opened two shelters in the area — at Yavapai College in Prescott and at the Wickenburg High School gym.

The 19 firefighters were found in an area that also had 19 fire shelters deployed. Some of those found were inside a shelter, which is typically used as a last resort to withstand the fire as it blows over. Some of the crew members were found outside the shelters.

This video shows the exercise they train in to deploy the tents in emergencies.

Very sad, thoughts to the families of the firefighters and the brave men who lost their lives trying to fight this fire.
