With the preliminary April 1 runoff forecast numbers in hand, this is “the worst year ever†on the Rio Grande, according to Phil King, New Mexico State University professor and the water management adviser to the Elephant Butte Irrigation District. “Ever†in this case translates to a century of water management on the river system through modern New Mexico.

Newfoundland is in the midst of a burst of winter

Freezing here with the windchill, some parts of the island are being forecast 20 to 35cm of snow! Cant believe the amounts being forecast for the time of year!

Down here in st johns its just lots of cold rain with some mixing forecast, fog and biting north easterly wind.

Most people off camping too with the long weekend on what is traditionally seen as the start of the summer camping season. Often hear jokes about being snow on the may 24 long weekend, no joke this year for some areas about to be walloped!

There's me moaning it's a bit overcast (shock horror) Posted Image

Batten down those hatches!

It's been a sucky few days (more so considering it's a long holiday weekend, everyone's confined to indoors). St Johns escaped any snow but it has basically been a raw 2/3 degrees (colder with the windchill and cold drizzle hitting your face) Sat/Sun/Mon with constant gloom, drizzle and fog. Single digit highs under a foggy NE flow is not uncommon here even can occur in spells in June (though be looking a little warmer than 3 degrees) so it's not a huge surprise to see a snap like this.

Gander however which is about a 4 hour drive into central Newfoundland really got hit with some ludicrous May weather and worse than was initially being forecast, they had 69cm  (sixty nine cm, it's no typo!) of snow with peak accumulations of 58cm. Just to put into context how bizarre (even for Newfoundland) this is, the record there for most snowfall ever in the entire month amounted to 49cm and biggest single May snowfall was 29cm......so they've pretty much rewrote all May snowfall records in the space of about 36 hours over the weekend!

be prepared for yet more rain..showers and thunderstorms up until Friday..and now they are saying from Friday onwards 5 or 6 days of continuous rain..and temps in single figures..this is why i dislike Canada in spring..always cold and wetPosted Image

What do you mean CM...this is what we live for after 8 months of snow....2 months of rain and then 2 months of some sun and maybe the odd hot day. Isn't that what everyone dreams of?

Yeah true..needed knowing what the next 8 months will bring.

We had intense rain about 1pm so wonder if it was the system that moved through here - did you get it 2-3pm?

Drought is one of the most costly natural disasters affecting the U.S. The National Integrated Drought Information System (NIDIS) was established in 2006 (NIDIS Act) to help begin to move society from a reactive response to drought to a proactive stance.  NIDIS was envisioned to be a dynamic and accessible drought information system that provides users with the ability to determine the potential impacts of drought and the associated risks they bring, and the decision support tools needed to better prepare for and mitigate the effects of drought.  In this, NIDIS forms the backbone of a national Drought Early Warning System and the U.S. Drought Portal is the public face of NIDIS on the Web.

We got friends staying near Canmore and they say it's ******* freezing. The locals are apparantly talking about the possibility of sleet on Friday.  Nice!

No such thing here as sleet..its either a rain/snow mix or a wintry mix...plus forecast for Canmore Friday is showers 12c

Other than Sunday's rain its been pretty nice for June. On and off sunny/showers and not persistant rain like normal.

Sadly for tourists I would never advise them to come to this part of the world in June. Its known locally as Monsoon June (cos I coined the phrase back in 2005 lol) and I think the prices replect that. We usually have a big dump of snow also.

Temp yesterday was 12oC - today is sunny and prob a little warmer at 15oC. Not bad for the time of year

Just checked this http://www.theweathernetwork.com/weather/canada/alberta/canmore?wbRef=www.canmorealberta.com&link=cityPage&switchto=c&ref=wxbtn150x90_text_city and it suggests a high of 6c on Friday, not 12c, but perhaps you know better.

As for the precip type, our friends were probably intelligent enough to work out that what the locals were calling a rain/snow or wintry mix is in fact what we call sleet.
