A shame for me, and anyone else who was looking forward to a historic blizzard, so you can save your lecture about people disliking snowfall/snowfall causing problems for someone who cares.

The previous highest snowfall in the region was 27 inches in Boston in 2003. They are expected to have somewhere around 30-40 inches from this one, and somewhere else will probably be hit worse. So yes it is very historic as its probably to only beat the previous snowfall records its probably going to annihilate them.

The local TV station for Boston was suggesting 24 inches, which is epic even by Boston standards!

Started snowing heavily in Boston about 30 minutes ago. Logan closed all day tomorrow, and later today.

Enjoy this image done as a joke about the storm, done by a US forecaster.

TWC are doing excellent coverage as always - live radar tracking anywhere in the world.

2-3 feet is biblical. We get excited by red warnings here - that would be a black warning surely!!

We had 50-60cm here on Jan 11th last month, there was some hype/talk on TV before hand that 100cm were possible though I think the media likes to go OTT so lets see what totals this storm does actually deliver down there. To be fair though a few spots bit a little further West on Newfoundland hit 70-90cm so they weren't far off with the hype.

I must say the city dealt with it really well here, 90% of the roads were passable with care (once you had dug your car out of the 4/5/6/10 foot drifts!) almost immediately after the storm has stopped, even during the storm the plows kept things pretty clear, the following day everything was open like normal although power outages were a problem for a couple of days. It's a tiny city compared to somewhere like Boston though, the logistics involved in trying to clean up a place like that after 2 feet of snow must be immense.

Historic?..i think not

CM - I'm in NY at the minute and flight home to NI cancelled until Saturday nite. They are talking about this being historic comparing to great blizzard of 1978 with upto 20 inches expected in NYC and as much as 34 - 40 in Boston / New England. A rate of upto 3 inches per hr with winds to severe gale / storm force.

So yes forecasters and locals are saying it will be historic. The forecast is spot on at moment with snow turned to ice pellets / sleet at minute and then to snow by 7pm NY time.

Regards

Johnny

Have updated my earlier forecast map, slight increases but basically the same forecast as before shifted slightly south in parts of eastern Mass.

This will be most intense overnight (towards morning in UK) when low is passing south of Nantucket, expecting widespread thunder-snow around 0100-0400 EST or 06-09z.

I swear only 4 or 5 years ago New York was hit with a bigger blizzard than they're forecast here, or is my mind playing tricks on me?
