In the very heavily built up areas like there i suspect that there will be a tonne of salt put down along with a lot of people. There are reports of slushiness though and several inches in the suburbs.

Latest from the New York Times.

A rare winter storm bearing ferocious winds and wet snow rolled into the Northeast on Saturday, knocking out power for hundreds of thousands of customers and threatening to topple October snowfall records in several states. Parts of Pennsylvania, New Jersey and southern New England received an unexpected fall guest: a foot of drift.

“Along with snow we’re going to have wind and high seas,” said Charlie Foley, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service. “We seem to have hit the jackpot. It is unusual to have something like this before Halloween.”

At the moment i would say that it looks as though it is a straight fight between Westchester, Sparta and West Milford (upstate New York and North West New Jersey.

Does anybody know if these areas have height as this could be helping things?

That explains some of the very high totals then.

Have not heard reports from White Plains or Yonkers.

West Chester, Pennsylvania is 163m asl; that's the only 'Westchester' settlement in the ne us I could find SB Posted Image

Weather ship- that's not nice Posted Image

Thanks..

Seems to be a pattern with this system then of Virginia south less than 9 inches, West Virginia to New Jersey (possibly higher) of up to a foot.

Yorktown, New York is approaching a foot.

Sparta is at 13 inches.

Morris County, New Jersey is at 13 inches.

West Milford has 15 inches of snow!

600,000 without power in New Jersey.

Yorktown has declared a state of emergency.

Sparta is at 14 inches.

I'm calling it a night.

My conclusion on this event is that while record breaking because of the time of year (2-4 inches widely in urban NYC with more in suburbs), if you were very close to the coast then conditions were too marginal resulting in slush or rain. Equally, if you were able to gain height then this storm was epic.

New Jersey looks the sweet spot (perhaps states further along but i hav'nt followed them), especially with elevation.

Last comment is that reports from New England and Maine are 15-18 inches.

Epic...

West Milford finished on 19 inches.

Lake Hopatong finished on 16 inches.

Sparta ended at 16 inches.

Middletown finished on 12 inches.

Bronx finished on 9 (New York suburb).

While the changeover from rain to snow occured much earlier than forecast, the models did pretty well on this one suggesting that it would be marginal near the coast and that New Jersey would get it worst. If you had elevation in New Jersey you could be forgiven for thinking it was mid winter.

Pitsburg also broke their record.

Fair to say that that nor'easter didn't fail to impress. I'll hope to track as many as I can by visiting this thread.

I'd like to thank ws, c_m and others for their updates :)

Here's a map showing the storm off Nova Scotia at 18z

http://www.weatheroffice.gc.ca/data/analysis/jac18_50.gif

Meanwhile the precip has all moved out of the northeast U.S. into eastern Canada now, mostly rain (3-4 C) in NS and PEI, mixed rain and snow in NB with some accumulations but nothing on the scale of yesterday (gradually the Atlantic influence is winning over the continental influence in the cold air trapped north of the low's track).

Noted final snowfall reports of 5.2" for Newark NJ, 2.9" for Central Park NYC and 11.4" for Worcester MA, all of which blew away daily and even monthly one-day records (which for these locations tend to be in the half-inch range). As some have noted, snowfalls of 15-20 inches fairly widespread further inland due more to distance from coast than elevation. Central Park recorded 2.00 inches of liquid equivalent meaning that there was enough moisture there for 15-20 inches of wet snow had it all fallen and stuck as snow.

Today (Sunday) by contrast was a clear and not all that cold a day in New York, highs 8-10 C, was watching part of the Giants home game at Meadowlands (NJ) and all you could see was a bit of snow piled around the outer edges of the playing field and a dry field otherwise.

By the way, this is the same storm as the low expected west of Ireland on Wednesday, unfortunately, everyone reading this will be on the warm side of that getting southerly gales and rain. Just as they are now getting offshore south of Newfoundland.

Certainly the biggest October snow story in quite a while for the northeast U.S., even back in the snow belt areas of Ontario I would say that 10 cms of snow in October would be a once every 5 to 10 year event with lake effect 90% likely to produce it. I can only recall ever seeing 10 cms of snow from a travelling low once before the end of October, that being in 1969 (referring to the Toronto region).

Nothing unfortunate about that whatsoever.

RJS- I would have thought that with a movement further north, and the fact the atlantic will be cooler outside Newfoundland/Nova Scotia than in North Carolina/New York, then it would be more likely for snow to occur in maritime Canada- would the air not be much cooler due to it's closer proximity to the arctic?

Latest image for October 30th showing the full extent of the snow cover from the storm.

A friend of mine in Manchester, NH says she has pics but cannot upload them yet because the power is out, she had to use an internet inverter (verizon thing) in her jeep/ (they use it on the road or camping for internet) to let us know.
