Nor'easters are sooooo amazing! Only thing that rivals them are polar lows and lake-effect, but it's uncomparable watching them slide across the east coast.

Brilliant snowfall for October; halloween is going to feel really cool over there if it lies for 2 days now. But with the very warm sst's and cold air- a lot of snow is going to fall.

Bearing in mind it has only snowed in October in New York four times since the 1800's, it's snowed more in London in October then it has in New York so this is really unusual.

A fair few trees coming down as they are still fully leaved.

I've been watching the Times Square cam and there's been a couple of rumbles of thunder in the past 20 minutes. Awesome!

Previous record was only about an inch set in central park. Already at 2 inches with 6-9 expected there. Westchester, NY is expecting over a foot.

Is this a nor'easter or just a low venturing up from the sw?

Same thing, yes it is a nor'easter.

They either get nor'easters (unless the low comes too far west/north) or they get lows traveling W-E across Canada (hence why they can get lake effect snow).

Manhattan currently has gusts to 21mph, NE wind and snow.

Last time I checked nor'easters originated in the Atlantic?

Nor'easters are lows coming from the south west. They form in the gulf of mexico, get loads of precipitation as it tracks across the east coast. It pulls in a lot of cold arctic air as they drive north and give quite cold air to the eastern seaboard area; sometimes delivering copious amounts of snow.
