Good overview to start :D

That phrase 'blizzard-like conditions' was used...

Yep,

They don't want to go into too much detail, but I think that is a reasonable forecast based on the models. I like the way that from Wednesday onwards it was showing snow to lower levels for eastern coastal areas.

Over-all a good forecast, should get a decent amount of shower activity from the north sea :)

Still forecasting some pretty high maximum temps, 5C for late in the week in Glasgow. Hmmm, I'm not convinced about that one. Maybe they will break us in gently?

The BBC often overdoes maximum temperatures in northerly regimes- one oddity of this quirk is that they are normally reliable with other wind directions including easterly. The starkest recent example was the northerly of the 29th January-1st February 2010 when the preceding Countryfile forecast went for maxima of 5-8C across the country when in reality they were between 2 and 5C for the vast majority. It's something that has crept into the BBC forecasts since around 2003.

The Countryfile forecasts are usually pretty good apart from this issue, I think it's just a quirk that snow lovers should be aware of!

Awful forecast.

"Things are set to get a lot colder" when it shows maxes of 4-7c on Friday, which is what we had this weekend

That can't be correct,we barely reached much higher than that today, and the BBC are still showing those sort of temps with much colder air coming across from Scandenavia by then.

Nick Miller today with a good overview of the bigger picture, warning of 'back to deep mid winter'.

Arctic air from Thursday and 'disruptive snow'.

Monday - maxes widely of 4ºC, fog reluctant to clear

Tuesday - maybe showery rain down east coast of England, fog and cloud elsewhere, still chilly

Wednesday - maybe sleety stuff in south east as a pocket of colder air interacts with the front moving down the east coast of England

Thursday - rain moving south, snow on back edge, then heavy snow in NI, western areas and maybe central southern England for a time. Maxes in Scotland by then of zero.

thanks Shuggee, what a pleasure to see someone posting a fair assessment of what is said and shown. beats all the repetitive hype from many, some who should know better, on the model thread. For newcomers read this for a quick simple explanation of what the weather is predicted to do this week.

Darren Betts did this evening's forecast and he is a notorious lover of all things mild, he seemed very confident none of the precipitation this week would bring snow, although the charts were clearly showing snow in north scotland for Friday he just said wintry showers..

I don't know where this idea of high pressure suddenly developing over the country late on Thursday into Friday has come from. I honestly think they don't have a clue for later in the week and were scared to say snow threat.. Also the headline cold and cloudy is a bit misleading in general it is going to be quite a wet week, cold and unsettled would have been a better phrase.

A poor forecast and one which won't verify from thursday onwards.

Country Tracks mentioned at the end of the forecast 'mild week ahead, but getting much colder the week after'.

I found that a bit bizarre to make such broad sweeping statement 10+ days in advance however with this confidence i can only assume that the Met have seen or are expecting changes in the up stream patterns.

So maybe we can expect height rises to our north/east, it's just a question of postioning and the small little matter of trigger/sliding lows to enable us to tap into that cold pool. :whistling:

Several BBC forecasters, e.g., Liam Dutton who tweeted about it 3 or 4 days ago, have been mentioning that the models seem to presage much colder weather around/after mid-month.
