It's been a year today since the one day heatwave of 27th May 2005.

London reached 32c and the heat was felt right across the UK.

Here in Telford the high was 25.7c and i remember it being the first

real warm day of 2005.

It wasn't "felt right across the UK" unfortunately, parts of Scotland barely reached 10C. It was a classic "southeast takes all" scenario, here although it hit 25C it was still 7C cooler than around London and yes it was the first warm day of the year, apart from that fact it was nothing especially remarkable for late May (in 2003 a similar temp occurred in mid-April, and that was felt even in NW Scotland).

27th May 2005 was indeed one of those temperature contrasts- London was more than 20C warmer than Edinburgh that day! In Lancaster it reached about 18C, and in Tyneside about 14C.

For heatwaves on 27 May, I seem to remember it being quite hot with some thunderstorms around this time in May 1999. The May of 2001 had some exceptionally high night minima around this time, while in May 2003, a notable heatwave- every bit as notable in the most-affected areas as in 2005- took over during the last few days and affected most of the country.

The heat in May 2003 started here in Bristol really on the 29th of May when it reached 26.1C. ON the 30th it made a 26.9C. Finally on the 31st it got up to 28.0C! The following day of June 1st it was still hot but thunder rumbled infrequently during the afternnon.
